Tornado damages Lucas Oil Speedway


A severe storm and possible tornado has done major damage to Lucas Oil Speedway, forcing this weekend's Lucas Oil Show-Me 100 presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com to be postponed.

Track and series officials are evaluating a makeup weekend for the crown jewel event for dirt Late Models and the USRA Modifieds. An update will be posted next Tuesday, May 28.

"Our first thoughts are for the people of the Wheatland community and the area and we are thankful that there were no fatalities," Lucas Oil Director of Racing Operations Dan Robinson said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected."

The storm moved into the area shortly before midnight and damaged several buildings, destroyed the grandstands at the off road track and also damaged some of the the grandstands at the dirt rack. There also was damage in the campground and debris was scattered throughout the facility. Several vehicles on-site were toppled, including some campers that had arrived for the weekend.

Homes and businesses throughout Wheatland suffered damage and much of the area was without power Tuesday morning.

Those purchasing advance tickets for the event should hang on to them as they will be honored when the event is rescheduled. Call the speedway office at (417) 282-5984 for more information, though phone service may not be readily available over the next few days.

Lucas Oil Speedway is considered by fans, drivers and industry insiders to be one of the top five racing facilities in the nation. Located in Wheatland, Mo., approximately an hour from Springfield and just an hour and a half from the Kansas City metro area, the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" lives up to its title.

Twenty-one VIP luxury suites, HD jumbo-tron screen, stadium style Musco Sports Lighting, a Bose Sound System, go-kart slick track, The Diamond Bar, Track Treasures Gift Shop, the best track food in the country and paved pits are a few of the spectacular amenities setting the Lucas Oil Speedway apart, and Lucas Oil Speedway's dirt oval track plays host to some of the largest and most popular events in the Midwest with national and regional touring series appearing frequently.

The USMTS is slated to visit the Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 3, for the 10th Annual Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout presented by Eibach Springs during the Casey’s General Stores Hunt for the USMTS National Championship powered by Summit.

In addition, the Lucas Oil Speedway hosts the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series features the USRA Modifieds and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods, plus Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models and O'Reilly Auto Parts Street Stocks on Saturday nights.

Lucas Oil Speedway is located at Highways 83 and 54 in Wheatland, Mo. A campground with shower and bathroom facilities is also available. With its entrance located just outside the pit gate this sprawling scenic camping facility will continue to enhance the racing experience at the Diamond of Dirt Tracks.
