Meyer wins in USMTS action at Powercom



BEAVER DAM, Wis. (June 28, 2002) - In Friday night action of the two day United States Modified Touring Series Special at the Raceway at Powercom Park in Beaver Dam, Tommy Meyer of Blooming Prairie, MN drove to victory in the 20-lap A-Main. Meyer, the North Region point leader, raced into the top spot from the pole position and led the distance to the checkered flag. Tim Donlinger of Rochester, MN stayed close throughout the event but could not find enough to wrestle the lead away from Meyer. U.S.M.T.S. National point leader Kelly Shryock of LeMars, IA moved up from the fourth row to finish in third. Dan Miller of Clyman, who currently leads the Raceway at Powercom Park regular season standings, drove a strong race to cross the line in fourth. Brian Mullen of Seymour followed in fifth. Joe Houpt of Mequon and Travis Spalding of Greenville moved up from the sixth row to finish in sixth and seventh. Mike Chasteen of Creve Coeur, IL came from the seventh row to take eighth. The top eight finishers are assured a spot in Saturday nightıs U.S.M.T.S. Prestige Cabinets 50-lap A-Main. Jim Zdroik of Big Bend was ninth. Steve Mueller of Mukwonago finished in tenth.

Modified B-Main wins were registered by Mike Chasteen and Steve Mueller. Heat race wins were recorded by M.J. Hintz of Green Bay, Bill Tandetzke of Milwaukee, Tim Donlinger and Tommy Meyer.

Falcon Smith of Oak Hill, OH grabbed the lead from Spider Akright of Sheboygan Falls on lap two and then held off the challenges of Nelson Stewart Indianapolis, IN, Eric Barth of Sauk City and Warren Ropp of Kalona, IA to claim the win in the 20-lap Legends A-Main. Stewart, Barth and Ropp engaged in a fierce battle for the second spot and each took turns at challenging Smith for the lead. When the dust settled, it was Smith across the line first followed by Stewart in second, Barth in third and Ropp in fourth. Greg Hartlaub of Sheboygan Falls drove to fifth. Finishing in sixth through tenth were Ric Mattie of Franksville, Dick Cromheecke of Beaver Dam, Eddie Mecum Sr. of Machesney Park, IL, Randy Manos Jr. of Kingston, IL and George Giesen of Neenah.

Legend heat race victories went to Eddie Mecum Sr. and Warren Ropp.

In action in the Stocks, Don VanderGalien of Lowell and Craig Lepple of Beaver Dam drove to victory in the heats. Lepple went on to win the dash with VanderGalien finishing in second. F.W. Formiller of Oshkosh followed in third ahead of Jamie Lastovich of Hartford. Paul DeLap of Oshkosh was fifth.
