Bone picks up first USMTS Southern Series win with last lap pass

McALLEN, TExas (Jan. 30, 2003) - Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., picked up his first win of the season in grand style by passing Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., coming out of the final turn for the checkered flag. The finish was too close to call for the flagman, but the two scorers had Bone ... barely.

Bone started the race from the eighth starting spot after re-drawing eight after picking up his heat win earlier in the night.

Mark McKim started the race from the AFCO Pole and jumped into the early lead with George White running second and Hughes third. White and McKim battled for the top spot for the first five laps before Hughes took the top spot on lap 6 and had the race under control until lap 23 when Bone pulled even going down the backstretch.

At the flagstand, Hughes and Bone ran side by side, sending Bone to the bottom of turns 1 and 2. Hughes tried to block Bone in the final turn but Bone held nothing back and took the spot for the final lap.

Early in the race, a lot of cars looked as if they would have the chance to run with Hughes. Skeet Amason moved up from the fifth row up to third on lap 8 before pulling off with engine trouble. Steve Kosiski was running strong before getting put to the back of the field after getting tangled up with Shawn Brassfield. Kosiski worked his way back to ninth.

Scott Drake worked his way up to third after starting the race from the sixth row.

Forty-eight cars checked in for the racing action and the racetrack was smooth, with five different lines for drivers to race.

Rounding out the top five were Eddie Martin and George White.

Picking up the Haulmark heat races were Craig Scott, Hughes, Kosiski, Bone and Ron Jones.

Winning the Harris Auto Racing B-mains were Randy Zimmerman and Martin. The two B-mains went flag to flag with no caution flags.

Racing action will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
