Weather wins Jayhawk kickoff, USMTS/SLMR doubleheader on for Friday and Saturday

What seems to be a recurring theme this season, it appears that, if most weather forecasters are correct, Mother Nature will not be friendly to the drivers and fans with this weekend's Jayhawk Classic on the to-do list.

With the number of travelers coming from all different directions, officials from the USMTS, SLMR and the Lakeside Speedway have decided to cancel Wednesday's open practice at the historic racetrack, as well as Thursday night's opener of the 12th Annual Jayhawk Classic.

“We are going to monitor how much rain we get on Thursday and Friday morning, and then make a decision on Friday and Saturday's shows,” USMTS President and promoter Todd Staley said. “If we can have a good track Friday then we will make it a two-day show. We will decide by 9 or 10 a.m. Friday after we see how much rain fell in Kansas City. If we decide we cannot race on Friday, we will not run a one-day show and will try and find a makeup date.”

If the event takes place on Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, then both USMTS Modifieds and SLMR Late Models will pay 5,000 to win Friday and $10,000 to win on Saturday. Since they were slated for Thursday's now-canceled event, USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods will not be racing at the Lakeside Speedway this weekend.

If everybody gets the green light we're all hoping for Friday morning, fans will get to witness the fire-breathing Modifieds of the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt alongside the popular Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) Series with drivers from both the Malvern Bank West Series and Hoker Trucking East Series in the mix.
