Final five events of USMTS Summer Speedweeks starts Tuesday at I-35 Speedway

Update: Tuesday's event at the I-35 Speedway has been rained out and postponed to Tuesday, July 12.

MASON CITY, Iowa -- Five more races remain in the most grueling stretch of races for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy as USMTS Summer Speedweeks kicks off this Tuesday, June 21, at the I-35 Speedway in Mason City, Iowa.

This will be the third straight year the series has invaded the half-mile clay oval at the North Iowa Fairgrounds. Ryan Ruter captured the inaugural event in 2009 while Mike Steensma won his career-first USMTS feature in last year’s standing-room-only tilt.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. The I-35 Speedway is a 1/2-mile semi-banked clay oval located off of I-35 at Exit 194, then 5.1 miles east on SR 122 (at the North Iowa Fairgrounds). For more information, call the track hotline at 641-424-6515 or visit www.i-35speedway.com online.

On Wednesday, action moves to the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta, Iowa, for the 4th Annual Battle at the Beaver with gats opening at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:30 and racing getting underway at 7 p.m.

After four events, four different drivers have conquered the 3/8-mile semi-banked dirt oval. Kelly Shryock won the inaugural event in 2008 while two visits were made in 2009 with Al Hejna and Jason Hughes emerging victorious. Last season, Ryan Gustin made ‘The Beaver’ home to one of his 16 wins on the season.

Pit gates will open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 6, hot laps begin at 6:30 and the first heat race is scheduled to take the green flag at 7 p.m.

Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on Thursday at Casey's General Stores locations in Alta, Aurelia and Storm Lake. To find the Casey's location nearest you, check out www.caseys.com online.

The 7th Annual All-Star Challenge takes place on Thursday, June 23, at the Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, S.D., where again no driver has captured more than one USMTS main event in the previous six shows.

Local favorite Jay Noteboom showed the way in the 2005 event while Kelly Shryock came back to win in 2006. Jason Krohn was the winner in 2007 en route to his first and only USMTS National Championship, Jason Hughes took the top prize in 2008 and Jon Tesch won on his 33rd birthday on June 16, 2009. The defending event champion is Ryan Gustin.

Race fans will get even more bang for their buck as Thursday’s program will also feature the Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and B-Mods, plus USRA Hobby Stocks. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps start at 7 and races begin at 7:30.

On Friday, it’s on to the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, for the first race at the 3/8-mile semi-banked dirt oval since the 2008 campaign.

Three different drivers have won in the three previous stops at the facility. Kelly Shryock took the win in the USMTS debut in 2006, Jon Tesch triumphed in 2007 and Jason Krohn won the lat time the series visited in 2008.

The Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and B-Mods plus USRA Hobby Stocks will round out Friday night’s blockbuster slate. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.

Three races have been held at the 1/3-mile semi-banked clay oval, and three familiar names have found victory lane. A doubleheader in 2009 saw Jon Tesch and Kelly Shryock take he wins while Jason Krohn turned his season around last year with a win at NCS.

The Brainerd Lakes area is a popular tourist destination with plenty of fun and adventure for the whole family before and after the races. Check out www.explorebrainerdlakes.com for more information.

The green flag waves to start the first heat race at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.
