‘New Mexico Nightmare’ on a roll entering WMDTC
ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Stormy Scott admits he races a little harder when Car No. 1st in his in his sight.
"When we race each other, we race harder than we'd race anyone else," Scott said, "but if I can't win, I'd rather see him win than anyone else."
The No. 1st car belongs to Stormy's twin brother, Johnny. Both are full-time drivers on the United States Modified Touring Series — Stormy is running away with this season's USMTS Rookie of the Year title, while Johnny was the 2010 USMTS Rookie of the Year.
The 22-year-old Scott brothers are twins, but don't share a birthday. Stormy was born shortly before midnight; Johnny shortly after. That doesn't diminish their sibling rivalry when they're on the track together.
One particular race this season, when the brothers were racing for the lead in a USMTS A Main, sticks out in Stormy's mind.
"At Allison, Iowa, (on June 29) we were slide-jobbing each other for the lead for three or four laps," Stormy said. "That was fun."
So who won?
"(Jason) Hughes won. I was in the lead and blew up a rear end with a lap to go," Stormy said, "but I was ahead (of Johnny)."
Stormy Scott has had many bad nights like that. He comes charging into Deer Creek Speedway this week for the second annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship. Nearly 100 cars are pre-registered and the winner of Saturday's A Main will take home $25,000.
Scott knows how to win a multi-day event like the WMDTC. He started the season strong, winning the $15,000 King of America II Modified Nationals at Humboldt (Kan.) Speedway on March 31.
The King of America is set up in the same fashion as the WMDTC — drivers go through time trials, heat races, B Mains and preliminary features on one of the first three nights of the four-night event. They earn points through those races and are slotted into a series of Mains on Saturday.
"We treat it like a normal race night," Scott said. "We don't worry about the setup as much as just staying focused. Qualifying in the heat race is the most important thing. You want to get a good finish in the heat and get (the passing points)."
Scott not only leads the Rookie of the Year points (by a whopping 683-point margin over Daniel Hilsabeck), he also leads the USMTS Casey's Cup points standings by three over Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas.
Scott has two wins this season, to go with 10 top-five finishes and 21 top-10 finishes in 39 USMTS A Mains.
He's continued his hot streak even while switching teams. He recently departed T.C. Motorsports to race for fellow USMTS driver Bryan Rowland.
"We know what we need to do to the car," Scott said about preparing for the WMDTC. "More than anything, we've just hit on some stuff and have the car going really good. It just comes down to trusting my car."
Changing teams has also meant changing his car number (from 2s to 20s) and chassis (from GRT to Hughes). He won the first night out in the new car and finished second his second time out.
"It didn't take much time to adjust to the different chassis," Scott said. "I wouldn't say either the GRT or the Hughes are a bad car, they just fit different styles. The Hughes car is easier to maneuver, easier to drive. It's easier to be consistent in the car.
