To mulligan or not to mulligan ...

To mulligan or not to mulligan ...

On average, if you are top 20 in points after the first two nights of qualifying at the World Modified Dirt Track Championship, you want to stick, right?

So, unofficially, it appears the top 32 in points after Friday night will at least have a B-Main spot. Eighteen go  to the A-Main, 14 going down to 32nd in points to first seven rows of the B-Main where it's $600 to start.

Unless you're a local car, the $600 nor the $1,000 for finishing 13th in the B-Main is in your thought process. The goal is to make top 12 in the B-Main so you can run that $95,000 purse A-Main. Last night's A-Main winner, Stormy Scott, came from 17th and last night's 11th place finisher came from 29th starting position in a 35-lap race, so if 'The Creek' is on, you can make some moves.

On average, if you're top 20 now and 'stick' you should be alright to make that B-Main for Saturday even after tonight's races and just have to run two races on Saturday. More unlikely odds say you'll be on the front row of the C-Main and have to race three times at worst.

So what do those other 76 cars do? No doubt what the bottom 50 or so should do unless race car fuel, tires or more shop time is needed for repairs or something. So positions 21-40 have some thinking to do.

As expected, local cars are doing very well. Remember last year, Minnesota's Brad Waits won this thing. So far, it's not going so well for Waits though. Mechanical problems in hot laps has him last in points, so you know he's a 'do-over' Friday night.

But Joey Jenson, who already has a $5,000 win at Deer Creek this year and made the A-Main through the B-Main at last year's WMDTC, has won the pole. Second and third on the front row has yet to be decided (they start three-wide in Saturday's $25,000-to-win A-Main), and there's a good chance that somebody from tonight's qualifying field can take one or both of those spots ... even a late entry who's not on the list of 96 pre-entered drivers. The top 5 right now are Wednesday cars with last night's runner-up, Dereck Ramirez (not winner Stormy Scott), leading Thursday night competitors after the wild scramble of finishes following time trials, heats, B- and A-Mains. Ramirez is sixth in overall points. Scott is seventh, which is a third row A-Main start at best for Saturday.

Second and fourth in points are Mike Sorenson and Jason Cummins -- two locals who know Deer Creek well but who also have proven that they can win some big ones. Both are past USMTS winners and Cummins has a $10,000 USRA Modified win in Las Cruces, N.M., to his credit.

Fifth place in points, which should be at least a third row start on Saturday barring some really odd stuff tonight, just celebrated his 16th birthday yesterday. Lucas Schott will now race for $25,000 two days after getting his Minnesota driver's license.

And look at the Okies in the top 10. Jason Hughes, Ramirez, Randy Timms, Bryan Rowland -- all Hughes Racing Chassis cars -- as are Sorenson and Schott, giving them seven of the top 10 at the moment. Even Zack VanderBeek (14th) is driving a Hughes chassis. Jensen and the ever-popular Jon Tesch in ninth are carrying the GRT banner so far. Cummins is the lone Skyrocket in the top 10, but a Skyrocket won this event last year so none of the big three chassis manufacturers can be counted out.

The Sidebiter Chassis of Ryan Ruter in 16th. He was having great night Thursday until fading late in the A-Main or he could have earned a spot beside Jensen on the front row.

Spring Valley hometown racer Mark Teske in 19th drives an LG2 chassis and the next non-big 3 would be the BC Chassis of Corey Dripps in 22nd. Another BC to keep an eye on is another local hot shoe with a Deer Creek USMTS win this year, Brandon Davis. He's a a disappointing 33rd so far, but does he take a mulligan tonight? Brandon finished 13th in this event last year.

The top Texan? Rodney Sanders in 11th (Hughes). Led for a while last night.

In 12th is the leading Missouri racer, Jeremy Payne (GRT) who will take the SLAP Energy Drink colors into The Hunt this year. His former boss and teammate from Missouri, Terry Phillips (GRT), is down in 34th so you know he'll be racing tonight and looking to start right beside Jensen. Phillips was third in the WMDTC last year.

Nine-time USMTS National Champion and Mr. Skyrocket himself, Kelly Shryock, is 13th and I bet he 'sticks'. He crashed out of a C-Main at this deal last year after using a mulligan when he had a good spot already locked up.

Tommy Weder Jr. in a Jason Hughes #12 back-up car is 15th, Iowa's Dean Mahlstead (GRT) is 17th, another local, Nate Wasmund (Hughes), is 18th and another Iowan Dan Bohr (GRT) is 20th. Bohr started on the front row of the WMDTC last year, and led the first dozen or so laps.

Now it gets interesting ...

In 21st is the leading Mid-South driver, T.J. Herndon from Tennessee. He will be real close to making that top 32 if he sticks with his GRT.

No doubt what 36th place Ryan Gustin (Hughes) will do. Last year's runner-up will race tonight. If he has a bad night, he'll just "alphabet soup" it on Saturday. The way he's been going, he's one guy that could win this thing from an H-Main.

OtherMid-South and Texas racers teeing it up again tonight:

26. Johnny Scott, Las Cruces, N.M. (didn't get out of the C last year)
32. Chris Brown, Cleveland, Texas (10th in C last year)
38. Shane Hebert, Lafayette, La. (top ten in A last year!)
40. Steve Whiteaker Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas (A-main starter last year)
61. Chris Dawson, Lubbock, Texas (running strong)

Eddie Martin (Oklahoma), Dallas Everett (only Arkansas entry), Timothy Culp (Louisiana - bet they don't forget the chip tonight!), William Gould (Oklahoma) and Brian Craighead (Louisiana) all having nothing to lose by racing again tonight and they shouldn't feel bad about it either.

Go get 'em guys!
