USMTS action at Ogilvie cut short by rain
OGILVIE, Minn. -- The main event field was set Wednesday night at the Ogilvie Raceway, but an untimely rain shower forced the postponement of the feature race for round 5 of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup.
With heat races and both Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains complete, the Swan Energy “A” Main will be made up on Friday, Sept. 7, when the USMTS Modifieds return to Ogilvie for the season finale of the USMTS National Championship Series.
Meanwhile, a field of 42 drivers was on hand Wednesday night for the first race in a five-day swing through Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. Heat race wins went to Kelly Estey, Kelly Shryock, Stormy Scott, Ryan Gustin and Jason Miller. Don Eischens and Dereck Ramirez were winners in the two Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains.
The top 8 drivers in passing points from the heats redrew for their starting spots, and Johnny Scott will start on the pole when the make-up feature takes the green flag. Miller will start on the outside of the front row with Stormy Scott, Jeremy Payne, Gustin, Shryock, Estey and Jason Hughes completing the first four rows in the line-up.
Seven advanced from each last chance race and two provisional starters – Al Hejna and Austin Siebert – will also start the main event from the last row on the 28-car grid.
On a wet Wisconsin night, the teams headed down the road to the Rice Lake Speedway where the stars and cars of the USMTS make their second voyage this season on Thursday night.
Jason Cummins and his Cheetos-sponsored #71 Modified will meet ‘n’ greet fans from 12-2 p.m. at the Casey’s General Store located at 6162 Main St. in North Branch, Minn. Fans can pick up $2-off coupons throughout the day at Casey’s locations in North Branch and Wyoming, Minn.
Gates will open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and the first heat race at 7 p.m. Super Stocks and Pure Stocks will also run a complete program.
Rice Lake Speedway is a high-banked 1/3-mile clay oval located 1 mile north of Rice Lake, between Hwy. 48 and Barron County SS. The track phone number is 715-236-2002 and more information can be obtained by calling 715-205-2861 or by checking the speedway website at www.ricelakespeedway.net.
Friday will find the series at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis., while Saturday’s action takes place at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa. The fifth and final event of the week happens Sunday at the Nobles County Speedway in Worthington, Minn.
