Team Report: Trevor Hunt Racing heads north for Memorial Day Weekend

KEARNEY, Mo. -- The Trevor Hunt Racing team wrapped up a busy week Sunday which included a pair of United States Modified Touring Series events sandwiched between two important stops before and after the weekend doubleheader.

Things got started on Friday afternoon with an appearance at the FVP Open House in Topeka, Kan., and then the team hauled the #99h Trevor Hunt Racing/FVP/Eibach Springs GRT Chassis powered by Yeoman Race Engines to the LA Raceway in La Monte, Mo., for the USMTS Casey’s Cup Series show that night.

A tough heat race put Hunt in the “B” Main where he passed four cars to earn a spot in the 40-lap “A” Main. It was a perfectly prepared racing surface but, unfortunately, Hunt’s time on the track lasted less than halfway as the engine expired on lap 19.

Twenty-four hours and one motor change later, the crew pulled into the historic West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Mo. Another stacked heat race forced Hunt to qualify through a “B” Main, but for the second night in a row he found a way into the big dance. Starting deep in the field on a hammer-down racetrack, it was a good learning experience and he finished on the lead lap in 15 after passing seven cars in the 40-lapper.

The weekend wrapped up on Sunday with a stop at Team GRT headquarters in Greenbrier, Ark., where they picked up a brand new GRT chassis which Hunt will debut when the USMTS Modifieds travel to the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, on Friday, June 7.

The team is set to trek north for the first time in 2013 with four big four USMTS Casey’s Cup Series shows on tap Memorial Day Weekend:

  • Wednesday, May 22 – I-35 Speedway, Mason City, Iowa
  • Thursday, May 23 – Fairmont Raceway, Fairmont, Minn.
  • Friday, May 24 – Chateau Raceway, Lansing, Minn.
  • Saturday, May 25 – Deer Creek Speedway, Spring Valley, Minn.

Hunt finished second last year at Fairmont in the USRA B-Mod division en route to the 2012 Iron Man Challenge championship. The team is hoping to rebound from last week and reclaim the top spot in the USMTS Rookie of the Year points where they currently trail Canadian Joey Galloway by a single point (882 to 881).
