Henigan sails to first USMTS win at Ark-La-Tex Speedway

Henigan sails to first USMTS win at Ark-La-Tex Speedway

VIVIAN, La. -- After a wire-to-wire win in Texas on Friday, Rodney Sanders was in good shape to repeat the feat on Saturday night during the 4th Annual Lecolift Cajun Clash at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., but there was one big difference: Chris Henigan.

From the outside of the front row, Sanders jumped out to a huge lead Saturday night at Gene Boyter’s high-banked 3/8-mile red clay oval. Polesitter Kelly Shryock challenged for the spot early on, but by lap 10 it looked like Sanders was going to run away and hide from the field.

Slowly but surely, however, it became apparent the Henigan was closing the gap. Two laps after the race’s only caution on lap 14, Henigan hustled his way by Shryock and then set his sights on ‘The Rocket.’

Henigan was alongside of Sanders within six laps, and by the time they crossed beneath the flagstand to complete lap 27 he was in the lead.

Using a hard-sliding low line that nobody else could seem to either discover or execute properly, he began to disappear from the chasing pack. By lap 35, Sanders moved down low to mimic Henigan’s line but was unable to reel in the 30-year-old from Marshall, Texas.

Henigan crossed the finish line 4.238 seconds ahead of Sanders while Ryan Gustin fought off Stormy Scott for third. Shryock held on for a top 5 finish.

The win was worth $2,000 to Henigan, and his first ever under the USMTS banner. Driving a brand new car he recently acquired from Shryock, it was also the first win for Skyrocket Chassis since a victory by Chris Brown last June at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo.

Zack VanderBeek grabbed the sixth spot, Steve Whiteaker Jr. was seventh, Brown bagged eighth, Cade Dillard started and finished ninth. Jason Krohn came from the 20th starting spot to round out the top 10 finishers and earned the race’s Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.

The weekend tripleheader wraps up on Sunday at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La., where fans have been treated to some exciting USMTS shows in the past.

In 2009, a caution flag with five laps to go doomed Kelly Shryock as it erased a seven-second lead and allowed Jason Hughes to muscle his way to victory. Two years later, Shryock returned to exact his revenge to win the last USMTS race here. Hughes also bagged the feature win in the series debut at The ‘Hill in 2007, while Jack Sullivan won in April 2009.

Pit gates open at 3 p.m. on Sunday, grandstand gates open at 5, hot laps begin at 5:30 and the racing starts at 6 p.m. Adults grandstand tickets are $17, youth ages 13-18 are $10, kids ages 6-12 are $5 and children ages 5 & under get in for free. Pit passes are $35. Local B-Mods and Factory Stocks will also be racing.

The Boothill Speedway is a 1/3-mile semi-banked clay oval located west of Shreveport on I-20 to the Carthage-Morningsport Exit (exit 3), then 0.2 mile north, then east on McGee Rd. For more information call 318-938-5373 or check out www.boothillspeedway.org online.

The event will pay up to $4,000 to win with a “Big Dog Buy-In” and will be the fifth race in the USMTS Allgayer, Inc. Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports.
