WEBSTER CITY, Iowa -- The never-ending winter has wreaked havoc on many racetracks already in 2013, and has forced the cancellation of all three events slated for May 2-4, for the United States Modified Touring Series.

The first three events in the Farm Boy BBQ Northern Region presented by Day Motor Sports were supposed to be held at the Rice Lake Speedway, Mississippi Thunder Speedway and Ogilvie Raceway.

Due to track conditions at the tracks involved in the weekend swing and a questionable weather forecast, the entire three-day trek through Wisconsin and Minnesota has been cancelled.

“This is not an ideal situation,” said Rice Lake co-owner Dave Adams. “But there is a possibility that a make-up date for the event may be scheduled, so fans should monitor the Rice Lake Speedway website as well as the USMTS website for possible developments.”

While many tracks in the northern region still have snow on them, Mississippi Thunder Speedway was able to get their USRA Weekly Racing Series season-opener in last Friday, April 26, with a racing surface characterized as ‘bump and grind.’

“Sorry to have to announce the USMTS swing scheduled to be at Rice Lake Thursday, MTS Friday and Ogilvie Saturday has been cancelled due to the predicted wet and cold weather conditions” said Mississippi Thunder’s Bob Timm. “There will be no races this Friday, May 3, and we will be taking this opportunity to do some equipment repair and work the track so everybody can count on favorable track conditions May 10 (for weekly racing).”

The good news for fans is that all three tracks will host another tripleheader on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 15-17, during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup.

The next event on the USMTS calendar is Thursday, May 16, at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo., where fans are hoping the third time’s the charm after two weather-related postponements in March and April. The next night will find the USMTS Modifieds at the LA Raceway in La Monte, Mo., and then at the West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Mo., on Saturday to round out an Arbor Masters Central Region tripleheader.
