Team Report: Hunt leads USMTS rookie points chase

KEARNEY, Mo. -- With four races on the agenda this past Memorial Day Weekend, Mother Nature saw fit to allow just two shows to be completed but both were two of the best outings this season for Trevor Hunt and the #99h Trevor Hunt Racing/FVP/Eibach Springs GRT Chassis powered by Yeoman Race Engines.

After rain forced the cancellation of Wednesday’s event at the I-35 Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, the team headed for the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn., for the first USMTS Casey’s Cup Series points race in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region.

After an exciting heat race which saw Hunt finish second to fellow teenager Lucas Schott but ahead of seasoned veterans like Joey Jensen, Dereck Ramirez, Ryan Ruter and Ron Jones, the team was confident heading into the main event where they grabbed an 11th-place finish behind USMTS legend Tommy Myer.

Friday found the Trevor Hunt Racing caravan at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn. Just shortly after his heat race, the skies opened up and rain forced the remainder of the event to be postponed. Hunt will have to qualify through a “B” Main when the USMTS returns to wrap up the program on Thursday, June 6.

On Saturday night, a huge field of cars were on hand with a big crowd looking on. Many of the spectators were sales people and customers of FVP, so it was a great night for Hunt to deliver a great result in front of his supporters.

“We were hoping for a racier racetrack, but we were still able to advance seven spots a track that was tough to pass on, so all in all it was a good night,” Hunt said. “I got the chance to go up and meet some of the people that were there from FVP. It was nice getting to know the other side of the FVP business and meeting a lot of the people there.”

Following a third-place finish in his heat race behind Jason Cummins and Brad Waits—two of the premier drivers at Deer Creek Speedway—Hunt started deep in the field for the 40-lap main event. The 14-year-old from Kearney, Mo., quickly began to move forward from his 18th starting spot, but by the time he cracked the top 10 the track had “rubbered-up” which resulted in a one-lane racing surface that made passing nearly impossible.

Hunt garnered another 11th-place finish to match his Thursday night effort but, more importantly, his two performances helped pad his lead in the USMTS Rookie of the Year points. With 18 races in the books, Hunt sits atop the standings with 1,071 points. Canadian Joey Galloway is just 39 markers behind in second place, followed by his teammate Masen Big Eagle, Texan Shane Sprinkle and Iowa’s Jeff Conner.

Winning the title would make Hunt the youngest ever to win the USMTS rookie crown in the 15-year history of the series. Past USMTS Rookie of the Year Award winners include Stormy Scott (2012), Jason Grimes (2011), Johnny Scott (2010), Grant Junghans (2009), Brandon Kenny (2008), Scott Green (2007), Jay Poidinger (2006), Brad McEwan (2005), Zack VanderBeek (2004), Corey Dripps (2003), Justin Boney (2002), Jason Hughes (2001) and Kevin Peters (2000).

Rookie points are awarded to each eligible driver based on the driver’s best 24 points-earning performances in all USMTS events during the year.
