Team Report: Hunt making progress, adds another milestone on USMTS campaign
KEARNEY, Mo. -- The whirlwind month of June kicked into overdrive this past week as Trevor Hunt and the #99h Trevor Hunt Racing/FVP/Eibach Springs GRT Chassis powered by Yeoman Race Engines embarked on five straight nights of racing in Iowa and Wisconsin.
Action kicked off on Tuesday, June 11, on the black clay of the big half-mile I-35 Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, where Hunt started 16th in the main event. After clawing his way up to eighth in the running order, a choppy late-race restart put the red, white and black modified back six spots where he finished 14th.
People often call the middle day of the work week ‘hump day’ but Wednesday, June 12, 2013, would more aptly be called ‘Hunt Day’ as Trevor recorded his best result to date with the United States Modified Touring Series at the Amsoil Speedway in Superior, Wis.
Following a stellar heat race that saw Hunt go from fifth to second, he started third in the feature and ran there for most of the race. Former WISSOTA national champion Craig Thatcher made a late-race pass to garner a the spot but Hunt finished fourth to score his first top-5 finish.
After passing polesitter Stormy Scott at the drop of the green flag, Hunt led the first two laps of the feature, making the USMTS Rookie of the Year points leader the youngest driver in the 15-year history of the USMTS to lead an “A” Main lap (14 years, 158 days old).
Thursday, June 13, took the team to the Eagle Valley Speedway in Jim Falls, Wis., with high hopes. Although the final result was not as satisfying as the previous night, Hunt advanced six spots to 17th after starting 23rd on the 24-car grid.
For the next two nights, the #99h Trevor Hunt Racing/FVP/Eibach Springs GRT Chassis powered by Yeoman Race Engines rolled into the historic Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis., for the running of the annual Masters event.
Hunt had a solid run, coming from 17th to 12th in the main event with several customers, salespeople and representatives from FVP on hand. It would prove to be just a single night of racing as Mother Nature decided to rain-out Saturday’s portion of the show.
The theme of the week was progress as Hunt not only got his career-best finish with the USMTS, but also passed 13 cars in the other three main events during the swing.
The most grueling part of the schedule is just getting started as the team hits the road for nine USMTS Casey’s Cup Series events in ten days beginning this Thursday, June 20, at the 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kan. From there, it’s a trek to the southwest corner of the Sunflower State to race at the Liberal Fairgrounds Speedway in Liberal, Kan.
On Saturday, June 22, the series makes its lone appearance of 2013 at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas, and then on Sunday, June 23, the first-ever appearance at the Elk City Speedway in Elk City, Okla.
The final rest day of Speedweeks will take place on Monday before the first ever visit to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, on Tuesday, June 25. On Wednesday, June 26, it’s on to the Heart O’ Texas Speedway near Waco, then back to the north for three nights to finish up on Thursday-Saturday, June 27-29, with repeat visits to the Kennedale (Texas) Speedway Park, RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, and Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.
