Lap sponsors sweeten the pot at Hamilton County Speedway
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa -- Not only will Wednesday night’s Ameriprise Financial “Clash of the Titans” featuring the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and United States Modified Touring Series be the biggest one-day event in the history of the historic Hamilton County Speedway, it may very well be the richest too.
The “Heartland Auto Racing Show Pacesetter Award” will be worth $200, $100 and $50 to the first-, second- and third-place drivers at the end of lap 1. Likewise, the “Caruth Concrete & Construction Victory Lap Award” will award the same amounts to the same positions at the end of the 40-lapper.
Even more money is earmarked for the middle with the “Plain Metal Salvage/Performance Electric Halfway Leader Award” worth $250, $150 and $100 to the first three drivers in the running order at the end of the 20th lap.
The other 37 laps aren’t chump change either. First, second and third at the end of each of those orbits get $50, $30 and $20, respectively.
Each lap will also have a mystery position that will get a piece of the pie. At the conclusion of the main event, the winning driver will draw a random number which represents the mystery position for the race. The driver holding down the mystery position each lap gets $25 on the first and last laps, $100 at lap 20 and $10 for each of the other 37 laps.

Thanks to event sponsor Ameriprise Financial, the USMTS main event winner is guaranteed to earn $3,000. But with lap money bonuses and the Big Dog Buy-In (drivers can pay an extra $100 at registration for an extra $2,000 to win), the driver in victory lane Wednesday night could walk away with a possible $7,500 jackpot.
Normally, the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award is worth $100 to the driver that passes the most cars in the main event, provided he is displaying the MVT decal. Thanks to Randy & Patty Eastvold (LeRoy, MN), Racerz Bar (Webster City), Rodger Caquelin Trucking (Dows), NAPA Auto Parts (Webster City) and Webster City True Value (Webster City), the Hard Charger Award on Wednesday night will earn more.
The event in Webster City—the biggest ever at the half-mile oval located about an hour north of Des Moines—will also be the final points race for the USMTS in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region presented by Day Motor Sports. After the checkered flag waves, another handful of drivers will punch their ticket to challenge in this year’s Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup.
Winning the regional title is worth $5,000. Stormy Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., is the current points leader in the region with Forest Lake, Minn.’s Joey Jensen just 33 points behind and New Sharon ace Zack VanderBeek another 17 markers back in third. Lucas Schott, Dereck Ramirez, Jason Hughes, Kelly Shryock, Johnny Scott, Trevor Hunt and Corey Dripps round out the top 10 spots.
The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series boosts a roster of premier Late Model pilots such as defending series champ Jimmy Owens, hall-of-famer Scott Bloomquist, Billy Moyer Jr., John Blankenship, Steve Francis, Don O'Neal, Dennis Erb Jr., Earl Pearson Jr., Jared Landers, Eddie Carrier Jr. and more.
The USMTS is the premier dirt modified series in the galaxy, and fans can expect to see the best of the best on the planet including former USMTS national champions Kelly Shryock, Jason Hughes, Jason Krohn and Tim Donlinger. Other superstars such as twin brothers Johnny and Stormy Scott, Joey Jensen, Zack VanderBeek, Lucas Schott, Dereck Ramirez, Trevor Hunt, Corey Dripps, Ron Jones, Jeremy Payne and more are expected.
Several drivers are also expected to pull double-duty, racing in both divisions at one or more of the events. Among the names planning on putting in overtime this week are two-time defending USMTS national champion Ryan Gustin and second-generation veteran Terry Phillips.
Tickets are $30 for adults, kids ages 13-16 are $15 and children ages 6-12 are $10. Pit passes are $40 each night. Pit gates will open at 2 p.m. and grandstands open at 4. There will be an autograph session for fans from 5:30-6 p.m., with hot laps set for 6:45 and racing to follow.
For those fans unable to attend, the event will be available live online via pay-per-view at DirtonDirt.com. Fans can place their pay-per-view orders now at www.dirtondirt.com/liveevents.php.
