Sorensen scores second O’Reilly USMTS win in three days

KASSON, Minn. -- Mike Sorensen backed up his win at the Murray County Speedway in Slayton, Minn., on Friday night with his second win of the Memorial Day Weekend on Sunday as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn.

Sorensen held off six-time defending O’Reilly USMTS champ Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, for the victory.

Brad McEwan of Storm Lake, Iowa, finished third in Jason Hughes' back-up car. McEwan's no. 26 Modified was damaged in a multi-car accident on Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.

Hughes, of Colcord, Okla., followed his temporary teammate across the finish line in fourth, while Kanawha, Iowa's Ryan Ruter rounded out the top-5 finishers.

Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., advanced six positions in the Holley "A" Main to earn the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger award.

On Monday, the O’Reilly USMTS takes a page from major league baseball -- minus the seventh-inning stretch -- with a one-day doubleheader at two tracks in two states. At 12 Noon, hot laps begin at the Steele County Fairgrounds in Owatonna, Minn., for a $2,000-to-win special Memorial Day non-points race, along with the B-Modifieds as the support class. After the checkers wave, we load 'em up and head across the border 90 miles to the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway for the Iowa Memorial Day Shootout. Corey Dripps of Waterloo, Iowa, and Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., tasted victory when the O’Reilly USMTS visited the Britt, Iowa facility April 1-2. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstand gates open at 5, hot laps start at 6 and racing action kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Also on the racing card will be a non-points show for USRA B-Modifieds ($300 to win), USRA Stock Cars ($400 to win), USRA Hobby Stocks ($300 to win) and Hornets ($100 to win).

A lightning-fast field of 24 cars will start the Holley "A" Main, with a $2,000 top prize on the line for each of the six events!

A big field of cars is expected for this event, including O’Reilly National Drivers Kelly Shryock, Mike Sorensen, Brad McEwan, Jason Hughes, Corey Dripps, Jon Tesch, Tommy Myer, Al Hejna, Zack VanderBeek, Ryan Ruter, Mark Noble, Roger Hadan, Julie McDermid, Gary Clark, Mike Wedelstadt, Jason Krohn, Bruce Hanford, Scott Drake, Greg Metz, Mike Hejna, Dean Mahlstedt, Brad Bakken, Alan Mondus, Brandon Morton, Dustin Boney, Jeremy Payne, Jake Neal, Gary March, Lynn Nillson, Bub Lerette, Willy Kraft, Steve Wetzstein, Jesse Frericks, Justin Cooper, Jordy Nelson, Tommy Weder Jr., Jeff James, Matt Gilbertson, Dan Fetters, Matt McDermid, Mike Chasteen, Johnny Bone Jr., Bob Timm, Ray Guss Jr., Tim Vogt, Danny Concelman, Brian Mullen, Mike Bennett, Steve Holzkamper, Scott Mullen, David Murray, Dan Daniels, Nate Wasmund, Danny McKeighan, Sean Jerovetz, Ryan Meyer, Jay Poidinger, Jeff Schluetter, Steve Stewart, John Vandenberg, Joe McBirnie, Neil Eckhart, Mark Dotson, Brad Waits, Mark Burgtorf, Darin Duffy and Tony Fraise.
