Shryock continues mastery of Osky oval
OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series returned to the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway on Wednesday night for the Pro-Environmental Summer Challenge presented by Victory Construction of Oskaloosa.
While a stout field of cars were on hand, along with some new drivers in attendance to challenge the "Best of the Best" on the big half-mile oval, it was a familiar face standing in the winner's circle at the end of the main event.
Tony Fraise of Donnellson, Iowa, who won the O’Reilly USMTS feature at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa on June 6, was perfectly positioned to make it two wins in two starts as he drew the #1 starting spot for the 30-lap "A" main.
Fraise paced the field to the green flag to start the main event, but that was the last time that he would hold the top spot as six-time defending O’Reilly USMTS champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa led the field to complete the first lap. From there, the race belonged to the #3 Skyrocket Modified while Fraise trailed in the runner-up spot from start to finish.
For Shryock, it was a $2,000 payday and his ninth career O’Reilly USMTS triumph as the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway -- his third this season after sweeping the April 8-9 events earlier this season at Oskaloosa.
While Shryock and Fraise raced one-two for all 30 laps, Corey Dripps of Waterloo, Iowa kept the race exciting for the fans with a rim-riding remarkable surge from the 23rd starting spot to a well-earned third-place finish. After knocking off 20 competitors, Dripps easily earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.
Finishing in the fourth spot was Tuesday night's winner, Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., who started 11th. Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway regular and stock car ace Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon, Iowa had a respectable run to round out the top-5 finishers.
Next up for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series is a visit to the Jackson (Minn.) Speedway for the $2,300-to-win Pro-Environmental Jackson Nationals on Saturday, July 16, followed by the much-anticipated season debut for the O’Reilly USMTS at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa for the $2,000-to-win Pro-Environmental Summer Classic on Sunday, July 17.
