Shryock wins Jackson Nationals
JACKSON, Minn. -- The final night of the 27th Annual Kemna-Asa Auto Plaza Jackson Nationals wrapped up with some great racing action on yet another warm and muggy night. Taking the Nationals Championship on Erickson Trucks-N-Parts of Jackson Night was Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, to score his eighth O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series feature win of the 2005 season, and solidify himself at the top of the points standings in his run for a seventh O’Reilly USMTS title.
Three different drivers led in the 30-lap main event. At the start, as the field was working on lap 1, pole sitter Greg Porth of Dundee, Minn., spun spin in turn 4. On the complete restart it was Brad McEwan of Storm Lake, Iowa, getting the early lead. Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., moved into the second spot with Willy Kraft of Lakefield, Minn., third.
On lap 2, Myer got by McEwan and took the lead. The leaders ran in this order through the race's first five laps when the caution came out for Mike Steensma of Luverne, Minn., who slowed on the front stretch. On the restart, Myer held off the field, but Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., got by Kraft for the third spot.
On lap 8, Krohn advanced another spot as he was able to get by McEwan for second.
On lap 9, Shryock moved into the third spot after starting 17th, and on lap 15 Shryock moved into the second position, putting Krohn back to third.
As the race went on, Myer led Shryock, Krohn and McEwan. On lap 17, Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., moved into fourth and put Krohn back a spot.
On lap 18, the battle for fourth heated up as Tesch, McEwan and Mike Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, crossed the line side by side. On the 19th lap, Hejna moved into the third spot, putting Krohn back to fifth.
As Myer began to pull away from the field, Krohn and Hejna raced side by side and battled for the third spot for several laps. Finally, on the 26th lap, Hejna maintained third as Krohn went to fourth.
On lap 28, Shryock caught Myer and made the pass for the lead. Myer, however, got the lead back on the white flag lap. As the field worked the last lap, Shryock got back by Myer and took the win.
Myer had to settle for second, followed by Hejna, Tesch and Krohn.
The "B" mains were won by Krohn and Hejna, with the heat race wins going to Eric Dailey of Armstrong, Iowa; Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn.,; McEwan; and Garry Oskerson of Fairmont, Minn.
Next up for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series is a visit to the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway for the $2,000-to-win Pro-Environmental Summer Classic on Sunday, July 17.
