Hejna claims second straight O’Reilly USMTS checkers in Illinois Shootout

QUINCY, Ill. -- The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series returned to the Quincy (Ill.) Raceways for the first time since 2003, as the 2004 event was rained out. Thirty-three O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds turned out in hopes of taking home the $2,000 top prize, but it was Clear Lake, Iowa's Al Hejna going home with his second straight O’Reilly USMTS win.

Brandon Lennox of New London, Mo., drew the pole position for the 40-lap feature, with Hejna drawing the outside front row. On the drop of the green flag, Hejna jumped out front to lead lap 1 over Lennox, Michael Long and Dean Mahlstedt. Hejna pulled out to a big advantage on the start, leaving the battle for second hot between Lennox, Long and Mahlstedt.

The first caution came out on lap 6 for debris on the back stretch, bringing the field back the Hejna's back bumper. On the restart, Hejna once again grabbed the top spot, with Long following him for second and Lennox in third. Long tried several times to get by Hejna for the top spot, but Hejna held him back on each occasions.

Hejna survived several more cautions to pick up his second straight O’Reilly USMTS feature event win, after winning the night before at the Knox County Fairgrounds in Knoxville, Ill.

Long, who ran second for several laps, pulled out on lap 36 with mechanical problems, giving second to Ryan Ruter, who started 13th. Mahlstedt finished a season-best third. Tommy Myer was fourth, with Jason Krohn rounding out the top-5.

Kenneth Cox of Greenland, Ark., earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors as he started 20th in the feature and passed 12 cars en route to an eighth-place finish.

The four-day swing wraps up on Saturday, Aug. 6, with Dirt Works Race Cars Memphis Shootout presented by Walker Collision & Spillman Auto at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo.
