Shryock returns to O’Reilly USMTS winners circle at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- The four-day swing for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series came to a close Saturday with the running of the Dirt Works Race Cars Memphis Shootout presented by Walker Collision & Spillman Auto at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo. When the checkered flag was thrown, it was Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, claiming his 13th O’Reilly USMTS win of 2005.

Newton, Ill. racer Chad Kinder drew the pole for the 40-lap feature, with Brad McEwan of Storm Lake, Iowa, starting beside him on the front row. On the drop of the green flag, Kinder jumped out to grab the top spot with McEwan following in second, Shryock in third and Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, in fourth.

Kinder, who won the O’Reilly USMTS main event at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway on May 14, had built a straight-away lead over second-place Hejna and third-place Shryock when the feature's only caution came out on lap 26. On the restart, Kinder once again gained the advantage to grab the lead, but now had Shryock battling him for the top spot.

Shryock jumped to the outside of Kinder coming out of turn 4 on lap 28 to take over the lead. Shryock then went on to lead the final 12 laps to pick up his first O’Reilly USMTS feature win since July 22.

Kinder held on for second. Third went to Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., with fourth place being awarded to both Hejna and 13th-starting Dean Mahlstedt of Garner, Iowa, as they crossed the finish line side-by-side in a dead heat.

Davenport, Iowa's Bruce Hanford once again picked up the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors as he started 23rd and passed 16 cars on his way to a seventh-place finish.

Shryock, Krohn, Quincy's Mark Burgtorf, Jerry Connors of Pleasant Valley, Iowa and McEwan picked up wins in the heat races while the "B" main winners were Mahlstedt and track points leader Tony Fraise of Donnellson, Iowa.

Watertown, S.D.'s Jon Tesch had his night come to an early end in the second heat race as he and Dan Chapman of Clarence, Iowa, got tangled up, sending Tesch's car flipping four or five times down the front stretch. Tesch climbed from his car uninjured. Mike Hughes of Rose Hill, Iowa, was sent to the tail for being involved along with Chapman, who was able to finish the race.

The O’Reilly USMTS cars and stars will be off until the next four-day swing begins on Thursday, Aug. 18 at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa.
