Shryock takes Kasson Klash cash, closes in on seventh O’Reilly USMTS title

KASSON, Minn. -- Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, beat polesitter Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., to the first turn and led every lap of the "Kasson Klash presented by AFCO" at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn., on Sunday night.

In addition to pocketing $2,000 for the victory, Shryock also moved one step closer to claiming his seventh straight O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series national championship with his 14th victory of the season behind the wheel of his familiar #3 Skyrocket Modified.

Brad McEwan of Storm Lake, Iowa, matched his best effort of the season with a runner-up finish while Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, finished third.

Two Gopher State pilots completed the top-5 finishers with Rochester's Mike Sorensen claiming the fourth spot while Brad Waits of Zumbrota took fifth.

With his second top-5 finish in two nights, Waits left Dodge County tied with Mike Spaulding of Bemidji, Minn., for the points lead in the AFCO Challenge. Spaulding, who won Saturday's main event at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., finished eighth in Sunday's main event to bring his tally even with Waits at 185 points.

Shryock sits third in the AFCO Challenge rankings with 183 points -- just two markers behind the leaders. A mere 12 points separate the current top 6 with Dean Mahlstedt (178), Bob Timm (174) and Mike Hejna (173) in a tight battle for the $3,000 top prize in the 10-race "series within a series."

Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie, Minn., earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors Sunday. Hillson started 24th before passing 10 cars en route to a 14th-place finish.

Following a competitive Labor Day Weekend doubleheader, the O’Reilly USMTS road warriors head to the southern half of the Show-Me State for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Missouri Nationals, featuring three nights at three of the fastest dirt ovals in the State.

On Friday, Sept. 9, the O’Reilly USMTS invades the Bolivar Speedway for a "mulligan" at the high-banked 3/8-mile oval. Rain was the winner when the series visited on Friday, May 13, earlier this year. On Saturday, the tour travels to the Lebanon I-44 Speedway before wrapping up the weekend swing at the Monett Speedway on Sunday. Chad Kinder captured the win when the O’Reilly USMTS stopped at Lebanon on May 14, while Terry Phillips came out on top of the May 15 event at Monett.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Missouri Nationals is expected to attract the "Best of the Best" in Modified racing as they compete for a $2,000 top prize each night -- the best-paying Modified show in the Midwest during the Sept. 9-11 weekend.
