Bone bags O’Reilly USMTS checkers at Monett

MONETT, Mo. -- Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., returned to the winner's circle Sunday, Sept. 11, as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Monett Speedway for the third and final round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Missouri Nationals.

Making just his fourth O’Reilly USMTS start this season, Bone picked off local veteran Stephen Muilenburg of Sparta, Mo., on lap 13 of the 35-lap main event, then held off Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., to take home the $2,000 top prize.

After demolishing a new car at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway the previous night, Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., put his backup car on the pole, then paced the first seven laps of the contest before giving way to top Home Pride Passing Points earner Muilenburg.

Bone, who finished fourth in last season's O’Reilly USMTS national points standings, followed Muilenburg around the outside of Holzkamper to take over the second spot. While Muilenburg chewed away at the blackening middle of the track, Bone used the low side of the racing surface to reel in Muilenburg and take the lead four laps later.

Hughes, who started 12th, claimed second place three laps later. Hughes slowly made up ground on Bone, but despite assistance from some late-race lapped traffic, was never able to pull alongside the leader and settled for the runner-up spot at the finish.

Muilenburg hung on for third, while current O’Reilly USMTS national points leader Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, was fourth. Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., finished fifth after starting 13th. Holzkamper took home sixth-place money.

Tommy Weder Jr. of Woodward, Okla., started 23rd, then raced to an eighth-place finish to garner the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

After a three-day break, the O’Reilly USMTS gets back in action on Thursday, Sept. 15, with a $2,000-to-win event at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa. From there, the "Best of the Best" head for the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, for the two-day Musco Lighting Iowa Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17, with a $2,000 and $3,000 top prizes, respectively, on the line.
