Hejna nabs seventh O’Reilly USMTS feature of 2005



<B>CORNING, Iowa --</B> Coming from the eighth starting spot, Al Hejna passed his younger brother, Mike Hejna, on lap 17, then led the final 13 laps to score his seventh O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series win of the season on Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa.

In addition to pocketing $2,000 for the win, the Clear Lake, Iowa, veteran moved into second place in the AFCO Challenge -- a $3,000-to-win "mini-series" comprised of the final 10 points events for the O’Reilly USMTS.

Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., gave chase, but settled for the runner-up finish while Current AFCO Challenge points leader Dean Mahlstedt of Garner, Iowa, grabbed third-place money in Thursday night's main event. Bruce Hanford of Davenport, Iowa, claimed the fourth spot while 10th-starting Mark Elliott of Webster City, Iowa, completed the top-5 finishers.

Shortly after losing the lead to his older brother, Mike Hejna suffered a flat tire and wound up 17th in the final rundown.

Storm Lake, Iowa's Brad McEwan garnered the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors by finishing 15th after starting 23rd on the grid.

Up next for the O’Reilly USMTS is a the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge doubleheader, Sept. 16-17, at the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Friday's main event is worth $2,000 to the winner while a $3,000 payday awaits the winner of Saturday's finale.
