Shryock secures O’Reilly USMTS title with victory at Oskaloosa
OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- Kelly Shryock passed polesitter Ryan Ruter on lap 8, then led the remaining 22 laps of the "Musco Lighting Fall Challenge" opening night main event at the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Friday night.
In addition to pocketing $2,000 for the win, Shryock also clinched his seventh straight O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series national championship with his 15th victory of the season behind the wheel of his familiar #3 Skyrocket Modified.
The second-generation Fertile, Iowa, racer remains the only national champion the O’Reilly USMTS has ever known.
Despite the rigorous schedule for the traveling series and the ever-present pits packed with the best Modified drivers in the nation, the 2005 season may be Shryock's best ever. Accompanying his series-leading 15 wins, Shryock has recorded an amazing 33 top-5 finishes and 41 top-10 finishes in the 44 races to-date.
Friday's win was Shryock's 10th career O’Reilly USMTS victory at the half-mile speedplant, and pushed his season earnings to over $50,000 -- not counting the forthcoming $10,000 check that goes to the O’Reilly USMTS national champion.
Dean Mahlstedt of Garner, Iowa, finished second in Friday's 30-lapper and solidified his spot atop the standings in the AFCO Challenge -- a $3,000-to-win "mini-series" comprised of the final 10 points events for the O’Reilly USMTS.
Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., finished in the third spot, while Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, took fourth. Ruter hung on for fifth-place money.
Corey Dripps of Waterloo, Iowa, took the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors with a 10th-place finish after starting 23rd on the grid.
Up next for the O’Reilly USMTS is the second night of the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge doubleheader, on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway. A $3,000 payday awaits the winner of Saturday's finale.
