Myer powers to $3,000 payday in Musco Lighting Fall Challenge

OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- Tommy Myer defied the odds Saturday night and picked up the $3,000 top prize in winning the main event at the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge at the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Myer, who started sixth in Saturday's 35-lapper, saw seven-time (and newly-crowned) O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series national champion take the top spot on lap 12 from Dean Mahlstedt while Myer battled for the third spot. With 10 career wins at the half-mile speedway -- including six of the last eight -- just about everybody would have written off the win to Shryock once he had the lead.

Myer, on the other hand, executed the improbable as he moved into second one lap later, then wrestled the lead away from Shryock on lap 18. Myer pulled away over the remaining 17 laps to score his fifth O’Reilly USMTS victory of the 2005 season -- his 35th top-10 finish in 45 races, and third top-3 finish of the three-race weekend.

Shryock, who clinched his seventh straight O’Reilly USMTS national title the previous night, settled for the runner-up paycheck while Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon, Iowa, claimed third. Donnellson, Iowa's Tony Fraise finished fourth with Ryan Ruter of Kanawha, Iowa, scoring his second fifth-place finish in as many nights.

Mahlstedt, who led the first 12 laps, slipped to an eighth-place finish, but maintained his points lead in the AFCO Challenge -- a $3,000-to-win "mini-series" comprised of the final 10 points events for the O’Reilly USMTS. Mahlstedt holds a slim 13-point advantage (698 to 685) over Myer heading into the final points races of the season, Oct. 21-22 at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo. Shryock sits third in the AFCO Challenge standings with 675 points, followed by Al Hejna (667) and Zack Vanderbeek (585).

Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway track champion Steve Stewart of Washington, Iowa, raced from the 20th starting spot to finish 12th in Saturday's main event, earning the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

Up next for the O’Reilly USMTS is the 7th annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 22-24. Thursday's main event winner gets $2,000 with $4,000 on the line for Friday's winner. The winner of Saturday's finale will earn a whopping $12,000. An open practice is slated for all teams on Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 5:30-9 p.m.
