Shryock storms from 24th to win Featherlite Fall Jamboree thriller Kelly Shryock responds to the crowd's cheers after winning Saturday's 35-lap feature race in dramatic fashion.

Shryock storms from 24th to win Featherlite Fall Jamboree thriller

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -– With five laps to go in Friday night’s 35-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series main event at the Deer Creek Speedway, the lead pack of drivers appeared to be content to hold their line and walk away with a top-5 finish. Kelly Shryock, on the other hand, was not content with a sixth-place paycheck so he ventured the road less traveled and sped to a $4,000 payoff on the second night of the 7th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree.

While his late-race heroics were entirely vintage Shryock, the six-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion caught a break in his heat race which may have been the difference between a victory and failing to make the feature race.

After starting seventh in the third heat, Shryock was pinched into the backstretch wall while battling for the second spot. The contact resulted in a yellow flag as Shryock pulled to a stop with a flat tire. As Shryock’s crew bolted on new rubber in the pits, the heat race went back to green without the Fertile, Iowa, pilot.

While Shryock stared helplessly at a probable back-of-the-pack “B” Main start after not finishing his heat race, a two-car tangle in turn 2 brought out another caution flag and gave Shryock renewed hope. Rejoining the field, Shryock clawed his way back to a fourth-placed finish -- not enough to make the big dance, but good enough for an outside front row starting spot in the fourth “B” main.

Despite lining up next to Batesville 100 runner-up and recent Sooner Roundup winner Jeremy Payne of Tucson, Ariz., Shryock was able to beat the polesitter to the first turn, then drive away unchallenged to a victory in the 12-lap last-chance race.

After uncharacteristically failing to make Thursday’s Jamboree main event, Shryock had made the show, albeit a 24th-place starting spot in Friday’s 35-lapper removed his name from nearly everybody’s list of possible winners.

Conversely, the redraw by the top 12 passing points earners from the heat races found Newton, Ill., ace Chad Kinder on the pole and his name atop a majority of the fans’ most-likely-to-win roster.

From the drop of the green flag, it looked like Kinder would not disappoint those who made that bet. With Mike Hejna giving chase, Kinder owned the top spot through three cautions that slowed the action in the first 10 laps. On each restart, Kinder again pulled away from the field and built his advantage to a full straightaway by lap 20.

After completing lap 21, Kinder appeared to lose control in turn 2, but was able to regain control and maintain the lead down the backstretch. The problem was terminal, however, as he pulled to the infield on the next lap with a flat right-rear tire while the field raced by.

Taking the reigns on lap 22, Hejna was unable to relax as Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., ducked underneath the new leader one lap later. Over the next five laps, Myer showed his nose to the Clear Lake, Iowa, racer on several occasions, but was unable to wrestle the lead away.

With 6 laps to go, Hejna moved his line even lower as the top 7 cars raced bumper to bumper around the bottom groove. With five laps remaining, nobody wanted to move out of line for fear of losing their place in line. Shryock’s fear, on the other hand, was losing the race.

As the lead pack entered turn 1 with three laps to go, Shryock moved his Modified up to the middle groove in the corner and picked off Jon Tesch for the fifth spot. In turns 3-4, Shryock drove around Kent Arment and crossed under flagstand in fourth place with two laps to go.

Racing down the backstretch, third-running Neil Eckhart gave up the spot to Shryock. As the leaders took the white flag, Myer was the next victim as he saw his runner-up paycheck slip away in turn 1. Shryock worked the middle line flawlessly again, and then raced side by side with Hejna down the back stretch.

With the checkered flag in sight, Shryock edged ahead of Hejna to take the win by half a car-length in one of the most impressive driving seminars in his storied career.

Although a bittersweet runner-up, Hejna turned in his best performance of the season with the O’Reilly USMTS road warriors at the track where a multi-car crash on May 28 sent him and four other drivers to the hospital.

One of those other injured drivers, Myer, held on for a third-place finish on Friday, with Eckhart finishing fourth and 20th-starting Tesch rounding out the top-5 finishers.

The third and final night of the 7th Annual Fall Jamboree takes place on Saturday with a $12,000 top prize awaiting the winner of the O’Reilly USMTS main event. Racing is scheduled for 5 p.m. with day-of-race tickets available at the gate.
