Hughes wins American Racer Fall Festival

BRITT, Iowa -- Back on May 30, the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series rolled into the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway for their 15th event of the season. Up to that point, Jason Hughes had struggled through the first two months of the season, but turned it around that night to grab his first O’Reilly USMTS win of the year.

Hughes won again three weeks later in Jamestown, N.D., but has been stuck in a dry spell ever since. For the chassis builder from Colcord, Okla., it seems there's no better way to get the monkey off his back than with a trip to the 3/8-mile oval in Britt, Iowa.

After starting Saturday's 40-lap main event from the outside or the front row, Hughes wrestled the lead away from polesitter Dean Mahlstedt on lap 14, then hid from the field over the final 26 circuits to score the $10,000 top prize in the inaugural American Racer Fall Festival.

Jon Tesch over Watertown, S.D., came out on top of a spirited race-long battle with Mahlstedt for the runner-up spot behind Hughes. Tesch followed Hughes underneath Mahlstedt on lap 14, but Mahlstedt was able to regain the second spot one lap later. The current AFCO Challenge points leader held off Tesch for the next 18 laps before surrendering the second spot on lap 32.

Seven-time O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, who won Friday's $1,000-to-win preliminary feature, finished fourth behind Mahlstedt, who pocketed $1,000 by winning Thursday's prelim.

Clear Lake's Al Hejna roared from an 11th starting position to take the fifth spot while Ryan Ruter of Kanawha climbed to sixth after starting the 40-lapper in 18th and earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

In B-Modified action, Matt Lettow of Roland picked up the win and $1,000 top prize. Polesitter Jake Simpson of Algona finished second, while Kip Siems of Cedar Falls charged from 17th on the starting grid to finish third in the main event. Mark Sathoff of Fairmont, Minn., and Doug Cook of Whittemore rounded out the top-5 finishers.

In Hobby Stock action, Dustin Smith of Lake City captured the $1,000-to-win feature race, followed by Humboldt's Calvin Lange, Andy Altenburg of Truman, Minn., John Madson of Britt and Donovan Smith of Lake City.

In the main event for the 2450-lb. Modifieds, Corey Dripps of Cedar Falls garnered the win and $1,000 reward. Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie, Minn., was second; Scott Baker of Monona finished third; Jeremy Mills of Garner was fourth; and Jeff Ignaszewski of Wells, Minn., completed the first five to the finish line.

Tom Schmitt of Independence brought his 2005 season winnings at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway to nearly $10,000 as he pocketed $3,000 for winning Saturday's Stock Car finale. Schmitt, who also won $6,600 when he captured the Unicover USRA Stock Car Nationals on Aug. 12, was followed to the finish by Stock Car Shootout Series winner Jeff Nielsen of Pocahontas. Todd Foster of Webster City finished third, followed by Scott Bauer of Riceville and Rodney Necker of Sumner.

The weekend is not over yet for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series. On Sunday, the travelling road warriors return to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., for the rain-postponed finale of the 7th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree, with a $12,000 top prize op for grabs.

For more information, contact the USMTS office by calling 515-832-7944 or email Race Director Todd Staley at todd@usmts.com. The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series is online at www.USMTS.com.
