Hughes wins 7th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree, hauls in $22,000 with weekend sweep
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Like a one-armed bandit, Jason Hughes invaded Iowa and Minnesota this past weekend and galloped off with more than $22,000 on his way back to Oklahoma.
Hughes, who pocketed $10,000 on Saturday for winning the American Racer Fall Festival at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa, completed the weekend sweep as he captured the finale of the 7th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., on Sunday and added another $12,000 to his two-day winnings.
With a 13th-place starting spot among the best Modified drivers ever assembled on a dirt oval, "Mr October" had his work cut out for him in the 33-car, 40-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series main event.
Waterloo, Iowa's Kevin Pittman took the lead at the drop of the green flag to start the O’Reilly USMTS nightcap. Pittman's reign was short-lived, however, as Watertown, S.D.'s Jon Tesch assumed the top spot on lap 4 following a caution on the third lap.
Tesch held the point for the next 11 laps while the action was hot and furious behind him. By lap 15, Hughes had worked his way into the top-5 while Al Hejna had muscled his way to 14th after starting in the 33rd and final position. Lap 15 was bad for Hejna, however, as mechanical woes sidelined the Clear Lake, Iowa pilot.
Lap 16 was good for Ryan Ruter though as he wrestled the lead away from Tesch. The Kanawha, Iowa, youngster built a commanding lead from that point, with Hughes moving into the second spot. As the leaders entered lapped traffic, Hughes closed in on Ruter and took the lead away with five circuits remaining.
One lap after taking the lead, a yellow flag slowed Hughes' march to victory, but the Colcord, Okla., veteran handled the restart with ease and cruised on to the checkers unchallenged.
Ruter finished second after swapping the runner-up spot with Tesch on each of the last five orbits. Tesch was third, while last Friday's preliminary feature winner Kelly Shryock settled for a fourth-place finish. Mike Spaulding of Bemidji, Minn., completed the top-5 finishers.
Sixth place went to weekly USRA Modified dominator Tim Donlinger of Rochester, followed by Les Duellman of Winona seventh, Rochester's Mike Sorensen eighth, Tony Fraise of Donnellson, Iowa, in ninth and 18th-starting Milo Veloz of Colona, Ill., 10th.
Jeff Spacek of Phillips, Wis., earned the title of Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger by finishing 14th after starting 32nd.
Shaun Peterson passed the most cars in the three days of qualifying heat races, and will receive an all-expense paid trip to the Daytona 500 in February, courtesy of Featherlite of Cresco. The package includes pit passes, hotel, airfare and tickets to all NASCAR races at Daytona International Speedway during Speedweeks. This total package is valued at over $4,000. Peterson, a rookie in his class, accomplished this feat while not making the feature event for the Thursday night program.
Sunday's event was a make-up date after being rained out last Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25.
Up next for the O’Reilly USMTS is the season finale Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., Oct. 21-22.
