Hughes wins third straight Modified Nationals at McAllen


<B>McALLEN, Texas --</B> The final night of the big weekend at the Valley Grass Farms Modified Nationals again started with Chamber of Commerce weather greating drivers, crews and fans. Procedures for the final night would change slightly with all cars, not qualified, running heats to set fields for C & B mains in the Modifieds, and B-mains in Limited Modifieds. Both classes would run two B-mains taking the top six from each to fill the last remaning spots for the big money A-main finales.

In the first of two Limited Modified B-mains, Trent Sousa and Roger Faulkner led the 19 car field to green. As the green waved, Greg Price and Jerry Hitchcock got tangled in turn 4 to bring out a red and get the duo unhooked. On the second try, Vince Louden spun and collected Kurt Hudgeons, Dylan Wiesse and Hitchcock. Finally under green Sousa grabbed the top spot.

By lap 3 the top three had began to get away from the pack, while Fran Collins, Ben Haddox and Bobby Craft ran three wide for 5th. The trio made contact sending Haddox and Craft high of the back stretch. F. Collins, on the high side began, a battle with Bobby Fehring for fifth as the leader started to creep away. Price would spin on lap 5 to bring out the yellow on lap 5.

Sousa got a two car length edge as green came back out while Fehring got by Art Rodriguez for fourth. Fehring then picked off Grey Tolleson on lap 6 for third and Faulkner on lap 7 for second. Brad Ball and Justin Collins battled for the sixth and final transfer spot. At halfway the top five were Sousa, Fehring, Faulkner, Tolleson and Rodriguez.

Fehring caught Sousa for the lead on lap 11, while J. Collins and Ball were still fighting for sixth. F. Collins would break on lap 12 and roll to a stop to bring out the yellow. On the restart, Mike Bearden spun in turn 4 to slow the action again. Fehring hung on to Sousa's bumper as green waved again and began to take looks inside for lead.

Bearden, who got his spot for being spun capitalized moving into a transfer spot getting by J. Collins on lap 14. With three to go the top three were running nose to tail for the top spot. As the white waved on the leaders, Bearden tried to grab another spot running along side Rodriguez. At the finish it was Sousa holding off Fehring and Faulkner for the win.

The second Limited B-main saw Jensen Pray and Shane Hoefling on the front row of the 20 lapper. Pray, the 2005 RG Spwy Limited Modified track champion, was out front going into turn 1. On lap 1 Steve Parker spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Pray got out to a couple car lengths advantage as green flew again, with Brad Brumley and Eddie Martin side by side for fifth.

Just as Pray began to ease ahead, the car began to smoke and he pulled to the infield. This handed the top spot to Hoefling on lap 3. Jeff Turner and Chester Cox jr got turned around in turn 2 to bring out the yellow on lap 3. Martin got by Michael Tanner on the restart for third as the top two got out. On lap five Ray Allen Kulhanek, Johnny Torres and Jeff Wood ran three wide for fifth.

Will Hudson and Bryan Nunn spun on lap 6 to bring out one many cautions. After several attempts on restarts for lap 7, the race finally resumed with Hoefling holding the point and Torres and Mitchell Johnson battling for fifth. Hudson and Parker got together in turn 1 on lap 9 for another yellow.

As green waved again, Wood moved in to fight with Gary Rollo for second. At the crossed flags it was Hoefling, Rollo, Wood, Kulkhanek and Johnson in the top five. Wood was able to get past Rollo on lap 10 for second as the top 6 spread out.

Wood began reeling the leader in by lap 15 and the top two had a scare when C. Cox spun in front of them. On the restart Wood would blow the motor with C. Cox, Johnson, Hudson and Chris Brandt spinnning in the fluid. Just as the resumed, Hudson and Ron Carroll got together prompting officials to call the race pfficial due to time limitarions with Hoefling getting the win.

The 40 lap, $ 2,000 to win 24 car Limited Modified A-main was led to green by Ronny Gould and Jason Hughes. Gould was out of turn 2 with the lead followed by Hughes with Howard Willis and Adam Schach side by side for third. It wasn’t long till the the top five sorted out single file. Aaron Hudgeons moved up to fifth getting by Mikulencak on lap 6, who then fell prey to Jamie Burford.

A. Hudgeons and Burford then ran side by side, while Gary Rollo, Rick Rogers and Ray Allen Kulhanek ran three wide for 12th. On lap 11, A. Hudgeons got by A. Schach for fifth as Johno Whittington began working on Willis for third. Whittington and Willis ran wheel to wheel swapping the spot on laps 13 and 14, with A Schach getting back along side A. Hudgeons for fifth. By lap 15, Gould had put some distance on Hughes, while Whittington and Willis contrinued to slug it out.

A. Schach retook fifth from A.Hudgeons on lap 16, while the leader, Gould was catching lap traffic.Whittington finally cleared Willis on lap 17, with A. Schach moving in on Willis for fourth. Caution waved on lap 18 for Burford who rolled to a stop in turn 4. Once back to green, Whittington and Hughes made slight contact giving Gould the chance to get ahead by a few car lengths. Back in the pack it was four wide for tenth.

Coming to halfway Whittington got by Hughes while A.Schach passed Willis making it Gould, Whittington, Hughes, A.Schach and Willis at the midway point. Dennie Geiber went up in smoke and stopped on lap21 to bring out a yellow. On the restart, Whittington and Hughes stayed side by side, while Willis took back fourth from A. Schach.

Whittington then began his assault on Gould for the lead on lap 23 taking a look outside. After running side by side on lap 24, Gould moved up a lane, with Whittington crossing over. As the lead duo battled it out, Willis, Hughes and Hudgeons closed the gap. Whittington finally got around Gould on lap 26, just as Mikulencak was spinning in turn 4.

On the restart, Whittington eased away from Gould and Hughes who were wheel to wheel for second. Brad Brumley and Bobby Fehring got together on the front stretch with Fehring slowing to bring out a yellow on lap 27. Back to green, the field stayed in formation until lap 29 when Gould took second back from Hughes.

Hudgeons had just got under Hughes for third when he broke and pulled to the infield. Mike Bearden took sixth away from A. Schach on lap 32. Gould was trying to run Whittington back down for the leaon lap 34, while Hughes bagan to fade. Gould lost a little ground on lap 36 as he dodged an infield tire.

With two to go, Whittington had a car length on Gould who had a big gap back to Hughes in third. On the last lap Gould was close enough to get the bumper on Whittington in turns 1 and 3, but Whittington, driving for a sick Kevin Sitton, in the Brazoria County Bail Bonds, Ray Maxwell Engines, Hot Chassis built by Chris Rutherford, held on and took the victory.

Dennis Lege' and Danny Brown paced the Modified C-main to green, with the top eight moving on to the b-mains, the rest loading up for the weekend. Lege' was first out into the lead on lap 1 when Jim Thorpe spun out of turn 2 after contact with Jesse Manning. Lege' was once again into the lead as green waved. Coming to complete lap 2 Jamie Schach, Ty Russell and Chris Carroll were three wide coming out of turn 4. Russell and Carroll hopped tires and got squeezed into the front stretch wall.

On the next restart yellow was on quickly for debris in turn 3. Lege' slid high going into turn 1 allowing Brown to get underneath and take the lead on lap 2 while Brian Killingsworth moved into third by Clay Huston. B Killingsworth then got beside Lege' for second when Justin Majek hooked wheels with another car and shot over the turn 1 hill after breaking free to bring out a yellow.

As green waved again, J. Schach got by Lege' for second as he slid high again in turn 1. B. Killingsworth took advantage of the slip to get inside Lege' for third. B Killingsworth got the spot on lap 4, but Lege' retook the position on lap 5. With the top five clear of the pack, Jeremy Haddox, Manning and Shane Killingsworth were in a fight for sixth.

J. Schach got under Brown coming out of turn 4 to grab thev lead on lap 7. As the race reached halfway the top five were J.`Schach, Brown, Lege', B.Killingsworth and C. Huston with a good three car scrap going on for third. TJ Huston then moved in to battle with J. Haddox on lap 13 for sixth.

J.Schach held a big lead on lap 15 while Killingsworth took over second. Lege' then tagged the turn 4 wall and broke pulling off from third. B. Killingsworth and C. Huston caught Brown with the trio fighting for second. J. Schach took the white flag with a huge lead and comfortably grabbed the checkers.

Roly Rodriguez and Larry Neighbors led the first Modified B-main to green with Chris Dawson spinning and collecting Shane Hebert in the back of the pack. R. Rodriguez got the jump out of turn 4 as green waved, but it was Neighbors eking out the lead coming to line on lap 1. Bobby Maupin and Wayne Brooks then went side by side for third for two laps, as Elias Anderson got around David Horner for fifth.

Maupin again got along side Brooks on lap 5 as they continued to slug it out. Lap 6 saw Terry Woodall, Mark McKim and John Armstrong go three wide for seventh, while Anderson slid high giving fifth back to Horner. The yellow waved on lap 7 when Ray Kulhanek slapped the wall in turn 4. On green, Brooks got by Rodriguez for second, while Adam Schach took sixth from Anderson.

Brooks then moved in on Neighbors for the lead with the duo side by side on lap 8. Brooks got the lead by a bumper on lap 9 as the two continued to fight wheel to wheel. Neighbors retook the top spot on lap 11, while Anderson took back sixth from A. Schach. Anderson then got along side Rodriguez for fifth as the leaders ran side side by side again.

At the mid point it was Neighbors, Brooks, Horner, Maupin and Anderson in the top five. Brooks inched back ahead of Neighbors for the point on lap 14, while Horner closed on both. A Schach got by Rodriguez for sixth on lap 15 when Jerry Waugh spun and collected Nicky Hardcastle. Brian Killingsworth plowed into the pile and got airborn, as the rest of the pack scattered.

On the restart Horner got by Neighbors for second, with Anderson passing Maupin for fourth. Anderson then got beside Neighbors for third on lap 17 as they ran side by side for two laps. In a fight for the transfer spot Bud Longpine got into Rodriguez and collected Greg Waugh for yellow on lap 21. On green, Anderson got by Horner in a fight for second that continued till lap 22, while A. Schach and Maupin fough it out for 5th.

That battle came to breaking point when A. Schach and Maupin made contact sending Maupion around and A. Schach to the pits with a flat. Brooks was able to hold on after the restart to take the win in the Bridwell Motorsports Pat Foreman Heads, Graham Jackson Engines, Showtime Signs, Dust Devil Race Car Chassis.

The second Modified B-main originally started with Wade Bates and Ronny Gould on the front row. Bates got out front on green, but going into turn 3 Gould slid high and backed it hard into the fence to bring about a complete restart. Jamie Burford moved up to the front row along side Bates for next start. Burford beat Bates into turn 1 for the lead.

Jarod Herring brought out the yellow on lap after he slid high in turn 1 and stopped in turn 2. On green Bates took a look under Burford for the lead but couldn't make the pass. Steve Whiteaker jr took over fifth from Brandon Blaylock on lap 2. Glen Hibbard and Bates ran wheel to wheel on lap 3 as they battled for second, swapping the spot corner for corner.

Scotty Brown and Whiteaker were able to run down that battle, while the leader Burford pulled away. Hibbard finally secured the second spot on lap 5. Lap 6 saw S. Brown and Bates side by side for fourth, with David Grigg, David Trauernicht and Eddie Martin ran three wide for seventh. Justin Raybourn brought the yellow with a spin on lap 7 that would change the complexion of the race.

On the restart Hibbard drifted up and made contact with S. Brown. The two hooked wheels sending them both into the front strtetch wall. S. Brown got up on two wheels and rode the wall tearing down some fence before S. Brown's car landed upside down on Hibbard's car, taking them both out of contention for an A-main transfer spot. Several others got pieces of the action and damage with Whiteaker pitting for repairs and restarting at the tail.

Once fence repairs were made, Burford got off quickly as green waved again, with Bates and Blaylock wheel to wheel for second. Martin, Grigg and Trauernicht again went three wide , this time for fourth on lap 8. Martin and Grigg got by Blaylock for third and fourth, still running side by side. Trauernicht finally made the pass on Blaylock for fifth.

At halfway the top five were Burford, Martin, Bates, Grigg and Trauernicht, with Burford holding a huge lead. Martin was beginning to reel in Burford by lap 15 and got a caution for debris to help close the gap. Martin wasted no time getting inside Burford on the restart with the two side by side before Martin took over the top spot on lap 17.

Trauernicht got by Bates for third on lap 17 for third, while Grigg, Herring and Whiteaker, coming from the back, fought for the final transfer spot. Whiteaker took fifth from Grigg on lap 20 then challenged Bates for fourth on lap 23. As the white flag waved Martin held a good lead and went on to take the checkers in his Driveline International, Blue Ribbon AutoGroup, HRT Racing Team, Performance Heads, MRW, X-Factor Pull Bars, Gilbert Racing Products,Longs Backhoe Service, Big Chief Chassis.

The grand finale of the night was the 50 lap main event for thev Modifieds paying $5,000 to win. Jason Hughes and Steve Majek paced the 24 car starting field to green with Hughes getting a jump out of turn 4 on green to quickly grab the lead. The front six sorted out single file with the remainder of the pack still side by side. On lap 4 Johno Whittington, Randy Timms and Howard Willis were three wide for seventh.

The top four of Hughes, Majek, Lawrence Mikulencak and Steve Holzkamper had started to pull away by lap 5. As the lead group checked out a vicious battle was going in the pack for sixth on back. Jason Hollis got by Robbie Starnes for sixth on lap 8, while Whittington and Timms were wheel to wheel for eighth. Caution waved on lap 11 for Jerry Waugh who got turned around in turn 1.

Holzkamper got by Majek on the restart for second, with Chris Brown getting beside Majek for third. Starnes then caught Mikulencak for fifth as they traded the spot on lap 13. Timms and Whittington caught that battle on lap 15. On lap17, Timms, Mikulencak and Starnes were three wide for fifth. Starnes and Timms were side by side on lap18, with Whittington, Eddie Martin and Mikulencak three wide for seventh behind them.

By lap 20, the top`three had distanced themselves from Brown, with Timms, Starnes and Whittington three wide for fifth as Martin looked for a hole to make it four wide. Martin got by Starnes on lap 22 but took a trip through the infield, never lifting, but losing a couple spots. At the crossed flags it was Hughes, Holzkamper, Majek, Brown and Whittington in the top five, with the lead trio holding a big advantage.

The top three then separated out by two car lengths each as Whittington got along side Brown for fourth. Whittington took the spot on lap while in the pack Mikulencak, David Trauernicht and Steve Whiteaker jr battled for tenth. Hughes started to flex his muscle and was pulling away on lap 32 when yellow waved after David Horner stopped in turns 1-2.

Back under green the top six sorted out with Martin moving into fifth. Whittington chances of doubling up on wins went away after he slapped the wall on lap 33 and slowed from fourth. Holzkamper was right on Hughes on lap 34, with Martin catching Majek for third. Whiteaker got by both Starnes and Brown on lap 35 for seventh.

Brandon Smith got a top five position when he passed Timms on lap 36. A lap later Martin finally got the pass made on Majek for third. Jamie Burford brought out the caution on lap 39 when he spun and collected Wayne Brooks and Horner. On the restart Holzkamper nearly squeezed Martin into the wall, but both continued on, while Smith and Timms both passed Majek.

With ten to go the top four had sorted out with Timms, Majek and Whiteaker battling for fifth. That trio stacked up and made contact causing Whiteaker to pull off with a flat tire. With the leaders single file, Jason Hollis and Trauernicht were wheel to wheel for seventh. Trauernicht made the pass on lap 45 as Starnes got inside Hollis for eighth.

Lap 46 saw yellow wave for debis on the front stretch. Martin got past Holzkamper for second on green with Smith and Timms staying side by side for fourth. Hollis brought out the final caution on lap 48 when he stopped in turn 2. Holzkamper retook second from Martin on green, but no one had anything for Hughes. Hughes, in the Deleon Race Engines, Rainbow Graphics, Deleon Auto Accessories, West Siloam Pawn, AERO Racing Wheels, Merts’ Truck Center, Pro Blend Motorsports Products, SAEF Custom Finish, Zamora Racing Heads, Hughes Chassis, would easily lead the final two circuits to become the only driver to win three Modified Nationals, breaking a tie between himself Starnes, Martin, Mikulencak and Paul White, the only other driver to win back to back.
