Shryock scores Iowa-Missouri Border War sweep

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, turned in a dominating performance Saturday night at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway as he closed out the Iowa-Missouri Border War doubleheader with his second win of the weekend and third triumph of the 2006 O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series season.

Mark Noble, who finished fourth for the second straight night and scored his ninth top-5 finish in nine races, led the first 16 laps of Saturday night's 35-lapper before Shryock snuck into the lead with a high-side pass to complete lap 17. From there, Shryock distanced himself from the field as he went on to notch his fifth career O’Reilly USMTS win at the semi-banked 3/8-mile oval in Memphis, Mo.

The seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ pocketed $2,000 for the win, bringing his 48-hour total take to $4,000 and inching him closer to national points leader Noble. The win, however, propelled Shryock into the points lead in both the Central and Southern Region standings.

Watertown, S.D.'s Jon Tesch gave chase to Shryock late in the race, but ran out of time and laps in the single-caution contest and had to settle for the runner-up paycheck. Tommy Myer took third ahead of his Blooming Prairie, Minn., counterpart while Brandon Morton of Coweta, Okla., recorded his career-best O’Reilly USMTS finish with a fifth-place showing.

The red flag waved on lap 4 of the Holley "A" Main as Jason Friesen and Mike Steensma -- the top pair in the battle for the Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the Year title -- got together, with Steensma's machine flipping over the turn 1 guardrail. Steensma was uninjured in the melee while Friesen struggled to a 12th-place finish.

The O’Reilly USMTS returns to the Show-Me State next weekend for a tripleheader journey to three of Missouri's fastest and finest dirt ovals for the 3rd Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Missouri Nationals.

On Friday, May 12, the rugged road warriors invade the Bolivar Speedway USA. Then on Saturday, the teams head for the Lebanon I-44 Speedway before wrapping up the three-race weekend at the Monett Speedway on Sunday.

All three events will pay $2,000 to win and award points in the Southern Region.
