Hughes edges Shryock for Monett prize

MONETT, Mo. -- Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., put a stop to Kelly Shryock's onslaught Sunday night before a packed grandstand at the Monett Speedway in Monett, Mo. -- albeit by mere inches -- to capture his first O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series feature race of the season. The win was also the first of the 2006 campaign for one of his Hughes Chassis Modifieds in the UNIJIG Builders Championship.

Shryock, who had won four of the last five O’Reilly USMTS events, made a last-corner effort on the final lap to get around Hughes at the finish of Sunday's 35-lapper, but was denied his 10th win in 20 starts and had to settle for second-place money at the pay window. Hughes pocketed $2,000 for winning the Summer Shootout presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts and moved into the top-10 of the Dirt Works Race Cars Southern Region points standings.

Shryock continues to lead the Dirt Works Race Cars Southern Region standings, as well as the national points chase as he looks to secure his eighth straight O’Reilly USMTS national crown. The Fertile, Iowa, veteran also leads in most other categories, including the Central Region standings, Reich Concrete/Yeager Machine Northeast Region standings, Home Pride Passing Points Northeast Region standings and the AMSOIL Lap Leader Award standings. Shryock's Skyrocket Chassis company also holds the top spot in the UNIJIG Builders Championship.

USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national points leader Jesse Stovall of Galena, Mo., earned a hard-fought third-place finish Sunday night, while Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., finished fourth after leading the first 22 laps of the race before surrendering the lead to Hughes. Late Model ace Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., rounded out the top five finishers.

UP NEXT: The “Best of the Best” invade the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, for the Inaugural O’Reilly USMTS Allison Clash on Tuesday, June 20. Then on Wednesday, June 21, the stars and cars of the O’Reilly USMTS make their long-awaited return to the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, for the 2nd Annual Howard County Fair Summer Classic. On Thursday, June 22, the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, plays host to the 2nd Annual Corning Shootout while the eight-day swing wraps up with a bang on Friday, June 23, with the debut of the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
