Shryock makes it three straight with rain-shortened Rock Rapids victory

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- Kelly Shryock wrapped up a stellar week on the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series trail with a victory in Friday night's inaugural event at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa. A hearty crowd and a large turnout in the pit area was on hand as the seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion captured his third win in three nights in his familiar white No. 3 Skyrocket modified.

The victory was worth $2,000 to the second-generation ace from Fertile, Iowa, as he led the last 21 of 24 laps in the rain-shortened main event which was originally scheduled for 35 laps.

Polesitter Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., jumped out to the early lead, but relinquished the top spot to Shryock on lap 3. Shryock, who started fifth but had moved into second place by the time the field exited the first turn at the start of the race, continued to lead Tesch around the 3/8-mile clay oval until the yellow flag was thrown on lap 24 for Al Hejna, who had stopped on the backstretch with a flat tire. During the caution, rain began to pelt the Lyons County Fairgrounds facility, and the event was called complete with Shryock garnering his 12th win in 24 starts this season.

Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake, Iowa, finished third behind Tesch, while rookie Josh Reisch of Luverne, Minn., turned in his best performance of the 2006 campaign with a fourth-place finish. Veteran Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., stormed from the 14th starting spot to take home fifth-place money at the finish.

Up next for the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will be a three-night trek through South Dakota, beginning with a Tuesday, June 27, stop at Interstate Speedway in Jefferson for the 2nd Annual Cookies BBQ Sauce 50 presented by KPTH Fox 44. On Wednesday, June 28, Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron plays host to the "Best of the Best" for the Inaugural Dakotaland Federal Credit Union Nationals. The mid-week tripleheader wraps up on Thursday, June 29 with the 3rd Annual Team Electronics Summer Slam at Casino Speedway in Watertown. Each show will pay $2,000 to win and a minimum $200 to start.

From there, the O’Reilly USMTS heads to the brand-new, state-of-the-art Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the 1st Annual “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” Modified Nationals on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, July 1-3. Monday's main event winner will pocket $5,000.
