Shryock chalks up 13th O’Reilly USMTS win in Cookies BBQ Sauce 40
JEFFERSON, S.D. -- In a caution-filled 40-lap Holley "A" Main, Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, picked up his 13th win of the season as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series invaded Interstate Speedway in Jefferson, S.D., for the 2nd Annual Cookies BBQ Sauce 40 presented by KPTH Fox 44.
At the start of the main event on the high-banked 1/4-mile oval, polesitter Bob Moore jumped into the lead, which he held for four laps before he was passed by Shryock on lap 5. On the move was Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., who had moved into second-place. On lap 8, however, a flat tire forced Noble to the pits and he had to rejoin the field at the tail of the pack for the restart.
Shryock kept the top spot until he encountered lapped traffic, which enabled another Blooming Prairie bullet -- Tommy Myer -- to challenge for the lead. Myer grabbed the lead on lap 24, but Shryock stormed back and regained the lead on the next lap. From there, Shryock was flawless as he paced the remaining 15 laps to the checkered flag.
Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, scored a third-place paycheck behind Myer, with O’Reilly USMTS rookie Josh Reisch of Luverne, Minn., taking fourth. Reisch, who started 18th in the 24-car field, earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors for his run. Noble rebounded to take fifth.
Up next for the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will be a stop at the Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron tomorrow (Wednesday, June 28) for the Inaugural Dakotaland Federal Credit Union Nationals. The mid-week tripleheader wraps up on Thursday, June 29, with the 3rd Annual Team Electronics Summer Slam at Casino Speedway in Watertown. Each show will pay $2,000 to win and a minimum $200 to start.
From there, the O’Reilly USMTS heads to the brand-new, state-of-the-art Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the 1st Annual “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” Modified Nationals on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, July 1-3. Monday's main event winner will pocket $5,000.
