Payne tops second night of 1st Annual “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” Nationals

WHEATLAND, Mo. -- In a race where passing was at a premium, Jeremy Payne may have made his best move of Sunday night's race when he drew the #1 spot for the 40-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series main event. The Cave City, Ark., young gun picked up the preliminary feature win at the 1st Annual “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” Nationals from the pole position, and positioned himself on the outside of the front row for Monday's Pole Dash to determine the starting spots for Monday night's $5,000-to-win finale at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.

Seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock, who won Saturday’s preliminary feature, will be on the pole for the Pole Dash.

Payne got off to a good start and jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green flag on the 3/8-mile clay oval. The race went caution-free until lap 20 when the yellow flag waved for debris on the racing surface. The race continued with Payne the leader until the second and final yellow of the race on lap 27 for debris. On the restart, Payne held off the challenges of Chad Kinder of Newton, Ill., to come home victorious.

Also guaranteeing themselves a spot in Monday's Pole Dash were third-place finisher Jerry Hoffman of Oronogo, Mo., and fourth-place finisher Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla.

The action continues at the state-of-the-art Lucas Oil Speedway on Monday, July 2. Gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 and racing is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. The O’Reilly MLRA Late Model Series will also be on the card.
