Shryock steamroller rolls through Arcadia

ARCADIA, Wis. -- Mike Hackett and a pair of "longtime racing buddies" made the 310-mile round-trip drive from Stevens Point, Wis., to the Fox Ridge Speedway in Arcadia, Wis., on Friday night to see what all the hoopla was about.

"We've heard so much about the USMTS Series and Kelly Shryock that we had to come down tonight to see it for ourselves," said Hackett as he and his entourage made their way to the Fox Ridge Speedway parking lot and a two-hour drive home. "What this guy (Shryock) is doing against this level of competition is unbelievable. Someday I'll be able to tell my kids that I saw him race."

Before Hackett's very eyes, and the rest of the enthusiastic crowd, Shryock delivered yet another impressive performance as he notched his 17th victory this season with the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series. The Fertile, Iowa, pilot pocketed $2,000 for the win as he sets his sights on an unprecedented eighth straight O’Reilly USMTS national championship.

Outside front row starter Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., got the jump on polesitter Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., at the drop of the green flag to start the 35-lap main event Friday night. Tesch paced the field for the first 15 laps before Shryock ran him down and slipped by for the lead. From there, Shryock survived a pair of late-race cautions and held off Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., to the checkered flag.

Tesch hung on for third, with Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., finishing fourth while Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., raced from 16th on the starting grid to cross the finish line in fifth.

Arcadia's John Doelle earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors as he started 25th and finished 12th.

The four-race weekend for the O’Reilly USMTS wraps up on Saturday, July 15, at the Jackson (Minn.) Speedway for the 28th Annual Jackson Nationals.
