Shryock wins 28th Annual Mountain Dew Jackson Nationals

JACKSON, Minn. -- Kelly Shryock's record-breaking season continued Saturday as he captured the 30-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series main event at the 28th Annual Mountain Dew Jackson Nationals at the Jackson Speedway in Jackson, Minn. The win was worth $2,000 plus bonus awards and contingencies.

After an uncharacteristic finish in his heat race where he finished worse than he started, the Fertile, Iowa, ace started the Holley "A" Main from the 13th position. It didn't take him long to flex his muscles as he moved into fourth as the field completed the sixth lap. Eight laps later, the caution flag flew for Jason Krohn's spin in turn 2. On the restart, Shryock snatched the lead from polesitter Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and that was all she wrote.

It was the third time this season that Shryock strung together three straight wins as the seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ notched his 18th win in 32 events. In 2005, Shryock collected 15 wins in 49 starts.

Myer hung on for the runner-up paycheck while Mike Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, was third. Krohn, who was piloting Shryock's backup car, bounced back from his earlier spin and threaded through the pack to take home a fourth-place finish. Lakefield, Minn.'s Willy Kraft scored his best O’Reilly USMTS finish of the season as he rounded out the top five finishers.

The Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger was Mark Elliott of Webster City, Iowa. Elliott started 25th and finished 9th.

Up next for the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors is a four-night swing of four $2,000-to-win races spanning three regions and four States. The quadrupleheader kicks off with a Central Region show on Tuesday, July 18, with the 2nd Annual Fort Dodge Modified Nationals at the Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, Iowa. From there, the Series treks into the Western Region for the Inaugural O’Reilly Auto Parts Modified Madness at the historic high-banked Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., on Wednesday, July 19. On Thursday, July 20, Huset's Speedway in Brandon, S.D., plays host to the O’Reilly USMTS speed merchants for the first time, and the final event in the tough Western Region. The action wraps up on Friday, July 21, with the 5th Annual Gopher Summer Challenge at the Murray County Speedway in Slayton, Minn., and the final points race in the Reich Concrete/Yeager Machine Northeast Region.
