2nd Annual Fort Dodge Modified Nationals to Shryock

FORT DODGE, Iowa -- Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, captured his 19th checkered flag of the season Tuesday as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series visited the Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, Iowa, for the 2nd Annual Fort Dodge Modified Nationals.

The seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ set sail from his pole position and was never challenged throughout the 30-lap contest as he brought his familiar No. 3 Skyrocket Modified into victory lane to collect the winner's trophy and $2,000 paycheck.

Clear Lake, Iowa's Al Hejna gave chase the entire distance, but was not able to mount a serious challenge to Shryock. Mark Elliott of Webster City, Iowa, gave the crowd something to cheer about as he chewed away at the high side of the Speedway, moving from 13th on the starting grid to third at the finish. The run netted Elliott the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake, Iowa, finished fourth while Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., rounded out the top five finishers.

Up next for the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors is a trek into the Western Region for the Inaugural O’Reilly Auto Parts Modified Madness at the historic high-banked Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., on Wednesday, July 19. Huset's Speedway in Brandon, S.D., plays host to the O’Reilly USMTS speed merchants for the first time on Thursday for the season's final event in the tough Western Region. The action wraps up on Friday with the 5th Annual Gopher Summer Challenge at the Murray County Speedway in Slayton, Minn., and the final points race in the Reich Concrete/Yeager Machine Northeast Region.
