VanderBeek victorious in Corning with wire-to-wire win

CORNING, Iowa -- The rugged road warriors O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series rolled into the Adams County Speedway Friday with victory on their minds and, for some, a chance to make a statement in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly National Championship. With a fast and heavy track for Friday night's 25-lap Holley "A" Main at the half-mile speedplant in Corning, Iowa, Zack VanderBeek made the loudest statement of all as he powered to a wire-to-wire win over the 24-car main event field, and served notice that he is the man to beat for this year's title. The win, worth $2,000 to the 2004 O’Reilly USMTS Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year, solidified his ranking at the top of the standings in ‘The Hunt’ as he seeks to become just the second driver to win the O’Reilly USMTS national crown in its eight-year existence. Despite his second triumph of the seaosn -- and second win during ‘The Hunt’ -- VanderBeek has the formidable task of keeping Fertile, Iowa's Kelly Shryock at bay. With a runner-up finish and some added Home Pride Passing Points on Friday night, the seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ gained just four points fewer than VanderBeek and remains within striking distance at 45 markers back (867 to 822). Racing from the 14th starting spot, ACS regular Chris Spieker of Massena, Iowa, finished third in Friday's main event, while Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., grabbed the fourth spot and remains third in ‘The Hunt’ standings behind VanderBeek and Shryock. Clear Lake, Iowa's Mike Hejna rounded out Friday's top-5 finishers. Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., grabbed sixth and sits fourth the points rankings with 760 points, followed by Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., with 750. Myer's championship hopes sank on Friday, however, as he crashed in the main event to wind up with the 21st-place check at the pay window. The Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger of the race was Ryan Ruter of Forest City, Iowa, who started 23rd and finished eighth. The action continues at the Adams County Speedway on Saturday, with the final night of the 2nd Annual Hawkeye Clash.
