Shryock steals Border War glory at Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa -- The final feature Friday night at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway saw the O'Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series put on a thrilling 35-lap main event with 24 of the best Modifieds in the country trying to cash in on the $2,000 payday and the title of 2nd Annual Iowa-Missouri Border War champion (on the Iowa side).

Polesitter Richie Gustin of Gilmar took the lead and paced the field the first three laps before eight-time defending O'Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile took the lead. Shryock led until Al Hejna of Clear Lake took the lead on lap 13, then swapped the top spot back and forth with Shryock for the next four laps.

By lap 17, Hejna had secured the point and appeared to be on his way to his third win of the season, but something in the rear end broke and he limped his machine to the pits on lap 29. Shryock led the final six laps en route to his third National Event win of the season.

Gustin made the pass off of the final turn to snag the runner-up spot from Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., who battled his way from the tail after making contact with Clear Lake's  Dean Mahlstedt on lap 9. Michael Long of Quincy, Ill., took fourth after starting 14th spot and fifth went to fellow Quincy quickster Mark Burgtorf, who started 13th.

Zack VanderBeek finished sixth ahead of Donnellson's Tony Fraise. Mahlstedt clawed his way back to an eighth-place finish after his early-race incident, while 15-year-old rookie sensation Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown finished ninth after starting 23rd. Another 15-year-old, Jake Neal of Omaha, rounded out the top 10 after starting 19th.

On Saturday, April 21, the rugged O'Reilly USMTS road warriors travel to the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway for round 2 of the 2nd Annual Iowa-Missouri Border War. Also on the racing card will be the season opener for the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks, Outlaw Hobbys and Hornets. Gates will open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6 and racing at 6:30. Grandstand admission will be $15 for adults, kids ages 6-12 are $5 and children 5 and under get in for FREE. Pit passes will be $25.
