Waits dominates 6th Annual Minnesota Spring Fling

KASSON, Minn. - Brad Waits turned the tables on Kelly Shryock Sunday at the Kasson Speedway. After grabbing the lead from Shryock midway through the main event on Saturday at the Deer Creek Speedway, lapped traffic helped Shryock regain the lead four laps later and he paced Waits the rest of the distance. On Sunday night, however, Waits was untouchable as he led all 35 laps of the 6th Annual Minnesota Spring Fling en route to his first O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series victory of the season.

Waits, from Zumbrota, grabbed the lead at the unfurling of the green flag, then flawlessly maneuvered through lapped traffic to score an uncontested $2,000 win in the Holley "A" Main. Shryock, who won the first two events of the four-race Memorial Day Weekend swing, started eighth and quickly climbed to second but the Fertile, Iowa, veteran couldn't muster enough muscle to mount a challenge to Waits.

Recently-wed Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., garnered his first top-5 finish of the season with a third-place showing, while Greg Skaggs of Bixby, Okla., raced from 13th on the starting grid to fourth at the finish. New Sharon, Iowa's Zack VanderBeek rounded out the top-5 finishers.

Steve Holzkamper, Jason Hughes, Corey Dripps, Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year contender Richie Gustin, Jr., and Texas hotshoe Chris Brown finished sixth through 10th, respectively.

The Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors went to Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, who started 23rd and finished 12th.

With 1,236 points, Shryock continues atop the national standings as he continues his quest for an unprecedented ninth straight O’Reilly USMTS crown. VanderBeek sits second in the rankings with 901 markers, followed by Al Hejna (746), Holzkamper (717), Jay Noteboom (651), Hughes (645), Skaggs (618), Jay Poidinger (610), Tommy Weder Jr. (595) and Cale Sponsler (557).

After three events in the Yeager Machine Northeast Region, Shryock leads Skaggs (308 to 254), followed by Holzkamper (251), Brown (233), Hughes (229), Tesch (227), Myer (210), Jake Neal (204), Waits (202) and VanderBeek (198).

Just a short 28-mile drive down the road from Kasson, the whirlwind four-race weekend will wrap up Monday with another $2,000-to-win, $250-to-start show and the triumphant return of the O’Reilly USMTS to the Steele County Speedway in Owatonna for the 4th Annual Memorial Day Shootout. Gates are slated to open at 3 p.m., hot laps are at 5 and the mud starts flying at 5:30. The Steele County Speedway is a 1/2-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 1.0 mile east of I-35 on US 14, then 1.2 miles north on CR 45 (at the Steele County Fairgrounds).
