Scharkey scores in inaugural O’Reilly USMTS event at Fountain City

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. - The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series paid its inaugural visit to the Tri-Oval Speedway on Friday before a jam-packed grandstands of hungry race fans. Experience on the uniquely-configured 3/8-mile semi-banked tri-oval proved to be valuable to the tune of $2,000 to Todd Scharkey of Kasson, Minn., who held off Mike Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., for the victory.

Scharkey and Sorensen finished in that same order last Friday, May 25, during a regular USRA Modified weekly show at the Fountain City, Wis., speedplant.

Sorensen got the advantage at the drop of the green flag to start the 35-lap main event, but his reign was short-lived as Scharkey blasted into the lead on lap 6. From there, Scharkey flawlessly negotiated the tricky track to score his third career O’Reilly USMTS victory.

Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., recorded his best O’Reilly USMTS finish of the season in third, while eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, raced from ninth to fourth. Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., pocketed the fifth-place paycheck. Sixth through 10th were Al Hejna, Zack VanderBeek, Bob Timm, Tommy Weder Jr. and Paul Hamernik.

The next stop for the O’Reilly USMTS will be Tuesday, June 12, for the 2nd Annual Allison Clash - a Yeager Machine Northeast Region tilt at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa. Pit gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and grandstand gates will swing open at 5:00. Hot laps start at 6:30 and the first green flag is scheduled to wave at 7:00. The Highway 3 Raceway is a half-mile semi-banked dirt tri-oval located 0.3 miles north of SR 3 on S. Main St. (towards downtown) at the Butler County Fairgrounds in Allison, Iowa. Day-of-race info is available by calling the track hotline at (319) 267-9977 or visit www.highway3raceway.com online.

Tuesday's event at Allison will also feature the high-powered USRA Late Models co-headlining the evening with a $2,000-to-win main event of their own. Also on the card will be USRA B-Mods ($400 to win) and USRA Hobby Stocks ($300 to win).

NOTES:

• Six different chassis builders were represented among the top-6 finishers. Shryock's Skyrocket Chassis continues to lead the 2007 Builders Championship, followed by Hughes Racing Chassis, TRE Chassis, Harris Auto Racing and GRT Race Cars.

• Paul Hamernik of Winona, Minn., earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors as he raced to a 10th-place finish from 18th on the starting grid.

• Friday's event wrapped up a swing of five straight nights with the fifth different winner of the week. Shryock's fourth-place finish Friday was his lowest main event finish of the week. He won at the Adams County Speedway on Tuesday, and finished second on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

• The rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors get a three-day break before resuming battle on Tuesday at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa. This event will be the first of 10 races in 11 days, with the swing wrapping up at the Nobles County Speedway in Worthington, Minn. After that, drivers will have more than three weeks to recuperate before the next event at the Butler County Motorplex in Rising City, Neb., on Monday, July 16.

• Shryock is setting the standard again this year as he seeks his unprecedented ninth O’Reilly USMTS crown. With 18 National Events in the books, he has seven wins and 17 top-5 finishes and leads every statistical category but one: he's third behind Jason Hughes and Johnny Bone Jr. in Home Pride Passing Points in the Southern Region.

• Shryock will celebrate his 42nd birthday at the I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Mo., on June 13. Other O’Reilly USMTS National drivers celebrating birthdays in June include Randy Timms (37 years old) on June 13, Jon Tesch (31) and Jeff Schluetter (43) on June 16, Tommy Myer (42) on June 17, Brad Pinkerton (35) on June 20 and Tony Fraise (41) on June 24.
