Shryock returns to Huset’s Speedway winners circle

BRANDON, S.D. — On his way to a likely win Tuesday night, a late-race caution flag spoiled Kelly Shryock’s happy ending at the Park Jefferson Speedway. Wednesday night at the Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., Shryock was on the receiving end of a late caution that helped lift him to his ninth O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series National Event victory of the season.

Just like Tuesday night, Wednesday’s main event at the legendary high-banked clay oval was jam-packed with action that kept the crowd entertained from green to checkered. Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., drew the pole position for the 40-lap Holley "A" Main, and jumped out to the early lead with Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., NASCAR star Ken Schrader of Concord, N.C., and New Sharon, Iowa’s Zack VanderBeek in tow.

Friesen set the pace for the first eight laps until a caution flag on lap 8 slowed the action just as the leaders were entering lapped traffic. On the restart, Schrader quickly disposed of Hughes, then moved to the high side of the steep corners. Using the top groove, Schrader brought the crowd to their feet as he zipped around Friesen to lead the 11th lap. Friesen got back around Schrader three laps later, but Schrader regained the lead again on lap 16.

By lap 20, Schrader had built himself an eight-car-length advantage over Friesen, who had his hands full with Hughes. Meanwhile, Real Racing Wheels "B" Main winners Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., and Shryock were charging to the front, filling the fifth and sixth spots by the race’s halfway point. Lap 26 saw Schrader battling heavy lapped traffic, but the dirt racing veteran maneuvered through the competition flawlessly and stretched his advantage to a full straight-away by lap 29.

Lap 29 also saw Hughes nudge his way past Friesen for second, while Shryock changed his line from the popular low groove to the extreme high side of the racetrack. Two laps later, Shryock had picked off Krohn, VanderBeek and Friesen to take control of the third position, but it would take a miracle or disaster for him to have any shot at Schrader.

Shryock got his miracle on lap 32 as disaster struck Schrader. With just eight laps to go, Schrader’s red No. 9 machine slowed in turn 4 and he coasted to a stop with a blown engine.

Hughes inherited the top spot for the restart, with Shryock and Friesen on his tail. As the green flag waved, Friesen’s BMS Modified lost a motor and his powerless start initiated a chain reaction that saw nine cars collected on the front stretch. With Friesen unable to continue, the third position for the restart belonged to Krohn, who captured Tuesday’s main event.

Hughes led lap 33, but Shryock sailed by on the next lap to gain the lead. From there, Hughes kept the eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS champ in sight but had to settle for the runner-up spot as Shryock crossed under the checkered flag first to earn the $2,000 payday. It was Shryock’s second straight win at Huset’s Speedway. Last year, the Fertile, Iowa, ace picked up the victory in the O’Reilly USMTS debut at the track in what turned out to be his sixth straight win en route to an O’Reilly USMTS record 11 straight wins during the summer of 2006.

Krohn followed Hughes across the finish line, with VanderBeek fourth and Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D. Corey Dripps, who started 17th, finished sixth, with Garry Oskerson seventh, Tommy Weder Jr. eighth, Jay Noteboom ninth and Tommy Myer 10th. Weder earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors by passing 15 cars after starting 23rd in the 24-car field.

Schrader, who recently purchased a new Skyrocket Chassis to replace his nine-year-old Dirt Works, finished a disappointing 20th while fellow NASCAR Nextel Cup Series superstar Kenny Wallace finished 11th in the main event.

If there was a hard luck award, Brent Bohmont of Martell, Neb., would have been the hands-down winner. With three laps to go in the second Real Racing Wheels "B" Main, and in position to transfer to the main event, Bohmont’s car got together with another car entering turn 3. Bohmont’s mount veered right, dug into the heavy racing surface, then barrel-rolled four times before coming to a rest against the retaining wall. "Smiley" was unhurt in the crash, but his Lucky Chassis was not as fortunate.

Up next, the rugged road warriors of the O’Reilly USMTS trek to the Casino Speedway in Watertown, S.D., on Thursday for another $2,000-to-win Western Region tilt. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., with hot laps at 7:00 and racing at 7:30. Casino Speedway is a 3/8-mile semi-banked clay oval located 4.0 miles northwest of US 212 on SR 20, then .7 mile south on Stokes-Thomas Lake Rd. (next to the city park).
