Shryock triumphs at Tri-Oval

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — When the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series paid its first-ever visit to the Tri-Oval Speedway on June 8, experience on the uniquely-configured 3/8-mile semi-banked tri-oval proved to be valuable as two Tri-Oval regulars — Todd Scharkey and Mike Sorensen — finished first and second in the main event.

The O’Reilly USMTS road warriors returned to the Fountain City, Wis., speedplant Friday night in front of another jam-packed grandstand full of fans, and eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ Kelly Shryock was eager to show what he had learned last time.

From the outside of the front row, Shryock immediately snagged the top spot from polesitter Jason Hughes and proceeded to lead all 35 laps of the Holley "A" Main to record his 12th National Event win of the year. Scharkey, who finished second on Wednesday night at the Kasson (Minn.) Speedway, chased Shryock from start to finish but had to settle for his second runner-up finish in three days.

Al Hejna pocketed a third-place paycheck, with Dean Mahlstedt finishing fourth and Zack VanderBeek coming home in fifth. Hughes hung on for sixth, followed by Bob Timm, Tommy Weder Jr., Jon Tesch and Paul Hamernik.

Mick Glenn earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors after starting 23rd on the 24-car grid and finishing 14th.

With the $2,000 win, Shryock extended his points lead in both the national standings and the Yeager Machine Northeast Region, where he can lock up the regional title simply by showing up at the regional finale on July 31.

The next event on the USMTS calendar is a long-awaited four-race swing for the USMTS Southern Series. The action kicks off on Thursday, July 26, at the Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove, Ark., for a $3,000-to-win show. From there, it's on to Monticello (Ark.) Speedway on Friday, July 27, where another $3,000 top prize is up for grabs. Fastrax Speedway in Chatham, La., is the venue on Saturday, July 28, for yet another $3,000-to-win battle, and the quadrupleheader wraps up with a $2,000-to-win showdown at Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La., on Sunday, July 29.

The next O’Reilly USMTS National Event will be at the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway for what promises to be one of the biggest shows of the year. Not only is it the final points race for the Yeager Machine Northeast Region, but fans will also get to see NASCAR stars Ken Schrader, Clint Bowyer and Kenny Wallace in competition. for more information, check out www.crescospeedway.com.
