Hughes bags USMTS Southern Series loot at Boothill

GREENWOOD, La. — Jason Hughes made it four winners in four nights Sunday as he dominated the 30-lap Holley "A" Main at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La. The Marshall Mobile Homes Battle of Boothill presented by Larry Shaw Race Cars, Bad Boy Mowers and Mark Martin Ford victory was worth $3,000 to Hughes, and was the fourth straight night of racing for the USMTS Southern Series which saw an average 61 cars compete each night.

From the outside of the front row, Hughes was untouchable on the big 7/16-mile high-banked clay oval, but the racing behind him throughout the 24-car field was enough to keep the fans on their feet from start to finish as six of the top-10 finishers came from outside of the top-10 for the start. Fellow Sooner State racer Greg Skaggs, who won the event at Monticello (Ark.) Speedway on Friday, cashed a runner-up paycheck Sunday.

Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla., won the main event on Saturday night at the Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, La., then finished third in Sunday's finale. Willy Kraft of Lakefield, Minn., finished fourth and Larry Clevenger of Greenwood, La. Steve Holzkamper, Jason Ingalls, Zack VanderBeek, Rodney Sanders and Scott Green finished sixth through 10th, respectively.

John Williams of Haughton, La., crossed the finish line in third, but was disqualified during post-race technical inspection.

The Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors went to Clevenger, who started 19th and finished.

THIRTEEN DRIVERS IN ‘THE HUNT’

Sunday's race at Boothill Speedway set the stage for several drivers as the first batch of drivers to compete for the national crown are now qualified. The top-10 in current USMTS Southern Series points, plus all other drivers with perfect attendance throughout the first 12 events of the season are locked in to ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship.

Eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock leads the USMTS Southern Series points over Timms (1084 to 983), followed by Skaggs (917), Hughes (916), Tommy Weder Jr. (899), Holzkamper (894), VanderBeek (889), Sanders (779), Jamie Burford (745) and Green (724). Outside of the top-10, but still qualifying for ‘The Hunt’ based on their perfect attendance in the USMTS Southern Series are Brandon Morton, Bobby Malchus and Dena Wilson.

‘The Hunt’ will be comprised of the final National Events of the season beginning Aug. 9 at Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, Kan, with qualifying through prior regional events. The O’Reilly USMTS National Championship points system will be used at all regional events, with the top-10 in the final standings of each Region earning 10 points for first place, 9 points for second place and so forth, descending to 1 point for the 10th-place finisher in the region. In addition, each driver who attended all events in a region will earn 5 bonus points. The total points earned for all regions will serve as the base points that each driver will start ‘The Hunt’ with. USMTS Southern Series drivers are also eligible to qualify for ‘The Hunt’. Drivers may use their best points combination from the four National Event regions or a combination of three regions and the USMTS Southern Series as their base points to begin ‘The Hunt’ with. After base points have been established, the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship points system will be used at the remaining events for the drivers in ‘The Hunt’ to determine the 2007 O’Reilly USMTS National Champion.

Created for the fans, the ‘The Hunt’ serves as a “playoff” for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. While handicapping gives a slight advantage to the drivers that compete on the entire National Events circuit, each of the top-10 drivers in any of the four regions or the USMTS Southern Series has a legitimate shot at capturing the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship.
