Shryock wins caution-free 40-lapper before standing-room-only crowd at Cresco

Shryock wins caution-free 40-lapper before standing-room-only crowd at Cresco

CRESCO, Iowa — How did you spend your Tuesday night?

For more than 3,000 screaming race fans, it was at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, where one of the largest audiences in the history of the Mighty Howard County Fairgrounds speedplant were treated to a full night of action with over 130 cars and drivers in five classes, including three NASCAR Nextel Cup Series stars. With 58 entries for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series, the night ended with a 26-car main event that went 40 laps without a caution.

After racing from last to first in his heat race, Les Duellman of Winona, Minn., started the Holley "A" Main from the pole, but it was Bob Timm of Rolling Stone, Minn., that snared the lead at the drop of the green flag with Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, in hot pursuit. Timm paced the first five laps while eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, moved up from his fourth-place starting spot to challenge Timm.

Three laps later, Shryock slipped underneath Timm to take the lead, and that was all she wrote. Shryock marched out to as much as a straight-away lead over the next 32 laps to take home the $2,000 top prize and his 13th O’Reilly USMTS National Event victory of the season.

"Coming here and getting the win in front of all these fans is awesome," Shryock said in victory lane. "We've gotten to know this track pretty good over the years, and I used to come here with my dad (Bob Shryock) a lot when I was a kid, so this is a really big win for us."

While Shryock maintained a safe distance over the field and appeared to pick off lapped cars with ease during the non-stop race, Hejna and Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., waged an intense battle during the last half of the race. Using the high side of the high-banked surface, Hughes was able to get around Hejna late in the race to take the runner-up spot while Hejna settled for a third-place paycheck.

Tommy Weder Jr. of Woodward, Okla., finished fourth, while Jason Krohn grabbed fifth. Krohn, who started 15th, earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

Ken Schrader finished best among the trio of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series stars on hand, finishing sixth in the main event after holding off Shryock for a win in their heat race. Rookie Ryan Gustin was seventh, followed by Timm, Duellman and Dean Mahlstedt. Kenny Wallace and Clint Bowyer both used sponsor provisionals to start the main event in the 25th and 26th spots, respectively. Wallace wound up 19th and Bowyer was 22nd at the finish.

Tuesday's barnburner was the final event in the Yeager Machine Northeast Region, with 11 drivers earning a spot in the ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. The top-10 in the Yeager Machine Northeast Region points, plus any other drivers with perfect attendance in the Region, were locked in. Shryock captured the Yeager Machine Northeast Region title with 957 points. The rest of the top-10 are Hughes (864), Zack VanderBeek (777), Jon Tesch (702), Tommy Myer (698), Weder (685), Hejna (610), Corey Dripps (592), Dean Mahlstedt (578) and Jay Poidinger (541). Scott Vesely, who finished 11th in the points, also earned a berth in ‘The Hunt’ with perfect attendance.

The next event on the USMTS calendar is a Central Region shootout as the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors head south to the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa for another NASCAR vs. USMTS event sponsored by MUSCO Lighting and Aaron's Sales & Lease Ownership. On Thursday, the series makes their annual return to the Knox County Fairgrounds in Knoxville, Ill., for another Central Region tilt and the Ed Sheckler Memorial presented by The UPS Store. Friday will find the tour at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield (Iowa) Speedway for another Central Region clash before wrapping up the five-race swing at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., for the final event in the Central Region and the Ed Sheckler Memorial presented by Pepsi.

All three NASCAR stars — Clint Bowyer, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace — will be at Oskaloosa on Wednesday. Schrader will also be in action at Knoxville on Thursday and Bloomfield on Friday.
