Weder wins on night 2 of Texas Fall Nationals

BEAUMONT, Texas — It took 111 tries before Tommy Weder Jr. finally got his first USMTS-sanctioned victory two weeks ago. It took him just three races to win his second.

Friday night at the Motorama Speedway, the 22-year-old from Woodward, Okla., captured his second USMTS Southern Series feature in the last four events as he topped the second night of the Inaugural Texas Fall Nationals at the Beaumont, Texas, speedplant.

The win was worth $2,000.

Weder's teammate, Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., grabbed the runner-up finish after racing from 11th on the 24-car starting grid. Thursday's winner, Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., started third and finished third Friday night.

USMTS Southern Series points leader Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, pocketed a fourth-place paycheck for the second straight night. Shryock, who started 14th, charged through the field with 15th-starting John O. Whittington of Vidor, Texas, following him to a fifth-place finish. While both drivers passed 10 cars, Shryock earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors with his higher finish.

Sixth through 10th went to Steven Whiteaker Jr., Paul White, Greg Skaggs, Brandon Kenny and Nicholas Littlejohn.

Shryock continues to lead the USMTS Southern Series standings with seven points-paying events remaining. Randy Timms held on to second in the rankings despite an 11th-place finish Friday night, and trails Shryock by 100 markers (1446 to 1346). Hughes sits third with 1279 points, followed by Weder (1270), Skaggs (1255), Holzkamper (1246), Scott Green (1013), Rodney Sanders (897), Zack VanderBeek (889) and Jamie Burford (887).

The USMTS Southern Series will puts the wraps on the inaugural Texas Fall Nationals with $3,000 on the line for the winner of Saturday's finale of the biggest race in the Lone Star State.

In addition to the Mod Masters of the USMTS Southern Series, Limited Modifieds will be competing for $1,000 to win. Pure Stocks will also be in action.

Gates open at 4 p.m., and the mud starts flying at 6:30.

Motorama Speedway is a high-banked 1/4-mile clay oval located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 (SSR) between Beaumont and China, Texas. Event information is available by calling 409-753-2370 or online at www.motoramaspeedway.com. For day-of-race information, call the track hotline at 409-752-7200. The track sits on approximately 23 acres surrounded by rice fields. Under the direction of new owner Butch Doyle, the grounds and buildings have undergone major renovations since the first of the year, and the wide racing surface provides for great, four-wide racing.

All USMTS rules will apply. American Racer is the Official Tire of the USMTS, and any driver seeking to receive USMTS Southern Series points and/or contingency awards must use the American Racer KK-704 racing tire. The Hoosier G60 tire will also be allowed for this race, but drivers will not be eligible for points or contingency awards.
