Chasteen says "cha-ching" at Chateau

<p>LANSING, Minn. (June 28, 2001) - On Thursday the United States Modified Touring Series invaded to Lansing, Minn., and the Chateau Raceway for the race that was rained out in May. The hot windy day made for a very dry track as the water truck could not keep up with the heat. Mike Chasteen of Peoria, Ill., started the race from the pole position and led all 40 laps of the Simpson Race Products main event as drivers raced on the bottom of the track. Chasteen pulled away from the second-place car of Steve Wetzstein, who had a whole crew of cars right on his rear bumper waiting for the first mistake he made. Wetzstein drove a very good race and came home with a runner-up finish. Todd Klees was the car right on the rear bumper attempting a few time to make the pass, but could never get the run to make that happen. The best battle of the night was for the 10th spot as Doug Hillson, Tommy Myer and Kelly Shryock battled for nearly the whole race with Shryock coming out on top with an eighth-place finish. Rounding out the top five was Ron Schreiner and Mike Sorensen. The USMTS attempted to keep the dust down after the heat races by watering the inside of the track, which was probably the wrong thing to do as drivers used the bottom for the entire feature. Shryock maintained the north region points lead. Winning the Harris Auto Racing heat races were David Siercks, Chasteen, Todd Klees, Schreiner and Sorensen. The Midwest Motorsports B-mains were won by Shryock and Hillson. Forty-three cars checked in for the racing action. The biggest ever crowd at the Chateau Raceway was also on hand. The USMTS is scheduled to be back here in August and will run only one support class with the modifieds to try and keep moisture in the track to make for better racing. The next race for the USMTS will be a two-day swing at Fox Ridge Raceway in Arcadia, Wis., and then Cedar Lake Speedway in Somerset, Wis., on Friday and Saturday, July 20-21.
