Shryock captures USMTS sound room Topless 75 race
ALLISON, Iowa (Aug. 15, 2001) - Kelly Shryock picked up his third win of the USMTS season at the Butler County Speedway in Allison, IA on Tuesday August 14th. This race was a special race sponsored by the Sound Room and Cooper Motors that had the USMTS modifieds race a 75 lap Simpson Race Products A-main with a mandatory pit stop at lap 40. At lap 40 drivers stooped for their stop and how they entered the track was how they restarted the last 35 laps.
At the beginning of the race Les Duellman and Dan Chapman started the race from the pole position. Chapman started the race with the lead and Duellman following for the first four laps. By lap four Russ Olson had worked his way to second and was racing side by side with Chapman for the next ten laps before mechanical failure took its toll on the b3 car spinning him out bringing out the caution. Kevin Pittman was also involved in the accident, but spun to avoid the accident and received his spot in second back when racing resumed. By the Shryock who started fifth worked the bottom of the speedway up to third and took second from Pittman on lap 18.
By lap 22 Shryock had taken the top spot from Chapman and the racing was hot behind Shryock between Chapman, Mike Chasteen, Tommy Myer, Jason Hughes and Pittman. On lap 38 Kevin Pittman broke something in the front ending his night. On lap 40 the yellow flag was thrown for the mandatory stop. Corey Dripps who had stopped earlier at a yellow flag was the first car out of the pit and took the point and lead lap 41 before being overtaken by Shryock. Tommy Myer was at second before the caution and came out of the pit area fifth at the restart. Tim Donlinger who was running sixth before the caution was the next driver to move up as he came out in third place. Shryock would take the lead and cruise on to victory in the last 35 laps. Mike Chasteen who took a provisional to get in after breaking in the heat race worked all the way to second. Rounding out the top five was Tim Donlinger, Jason Hughes, and Tommy Myer.
A brief rain shower came thru the area before the Midwest Motorsports B-main. Area rains kept some of the fans and drivers away from this race. Fans were treated to some great side by side racing as a very good crowd seen this first ever USMTS 75 lap main event. The Harris Auto Racing Heat Races were won by Chapman, Duellman, Olson, and Pittman. The Midwest Motorsports B-main was won by Rich Lewis.
