Jason Hughes Picks Up USMTS Win at Humboldt Speedway
by Todd Staley
HUMBOLDT, Kan.(April 26, 2002) - Jason Hughes who dominated Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, KS picked up where he left off last season. Hughes won two of the three events last season at Humboldt which would have been all three but slid off the track late in the first race and settled for a second place finish. Hughes started the $3000 to win Main Event from the outside front row after finishing second to Kelly Shryock in the qualifier. Hughes and Shryock would race side by side the first five laps with Shryock leading lap one only. After lap twelve Shryock would go into turn three too hard and would slide off the top of the track and would come back onto the track in sixth place giving the second spot to Mark Noble. The man on the move was Randy Zimmerman who would start sixth. The first yellow of the race came out at lap 29 which would bunch the field back up. At the yellow Zimmerman was second with Noble, Shryock and Bone rounding out the top five. The man on the move at this time was the #99 of Jess Folk Sr. Folk who started 13 th had worked his way up to seventh. On the restart Hughes and Zimmerman would race side by side in turns 1-2, but Hughes car seemed to be faster in 3-4. Zimmerman would make several attempts at passing Hughes, but could not muster up enough speed to get the job done. Hughes would win by four car lengths with Zimmerman finishing second. Late in the race Folk tried passing Bone and they touched. Johnny Bone’s body would rub on his tire giving him a flat tire with one lap to go. Rounding out the top five was Noble, Shryock, and Scott Drake. Winning heat races on Friday was Justin Boney, Scott Drake, Chris Spieker, and Skeet Amason. Winning B-mains were Dan Daniels and Jess Folk Jr. Shryock will maintain the point lead moving to the next race over Tommy Myer.
