Whiseant wires O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series field at Ark-La-Tex Speedway

VIVIAN, La. – Duke Whiseant of Texarkana, Ark., became the second first-time winner in as many nights as he captured the 40-lap Holley "A" Main for the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series Thursday at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La.

A successful Late Model racer with the O’Reilly SUPR Series, Whiseant found himself on the outside of the front row for the start of the main event and jumped ahead of polesitter Timothy Culp at the drop of the green flag.

But Culp never faded, challenged Whiseant with each passing lap and briefly moved into the lead on lap 13. Culp's nearly spun after his power surge into the corner, however, and the result was a flat tire that extinguished his hopes of a USMTS checkered flag.

Whiseant maintained the lead for the duration of the contest and cruised to a $2,000 win and became the eighth different O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series winner in twelve races this season.

Johnny Bone Jr. and Jason Hughes gave the fans a classic battle that saw Bone nip the current points leader by a nose at the finish line. Tommy Weder Jr. followed in fourth while Steve Holzkamper claimed fifth-place prize money.

Jason Armstrong, defending O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series points champion Kelly Shryock, Chris Henigan, Jamie Burford and Dereck Ramirez finished sixth through tenth, respectively.

Holzkamper kept Hughes within striking distance in the points battle, now trailing by 19 markers (1089 to 1070). Weder is on an island in third with 966 points, which puts him more than 100 behind Holzkamper and more than 100 ahead of his nearest competitor, John O. Whittington (865). Paul White is fifth with 826 points, followed by Shane Hebert (791), Bryan Rowland (778), Ramirez (763), Rodney Sanders (742) and Brandon Kenny (740).

UP NEXT:

On Friday, June 6, the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series returns to the Monticello Speedway in Monticello, Ark., for an encore of one of the biggest races on last year's calendar that saw 73 Modifieds in attendance. The event is sponsored by Commercial Bank of Monticello.
