Shryock tops Thursday USMTS action at Godfrey

GODFREY, Ill. -- The United States Modified Touring Series raced at the Godfrey Speedway in Godfrey, IL Thursday evening and Friday evening. This race was rescheduled from two weeks ago when rain fell at the speedway before the racing action started.

Track promoters decided to make it right for the travelers and made the one-day show into a two-day show. Threatening weather all week left some of the travelers at home as forecasted heavy rain was said to fall in the Illinois area. Those drivers that did not come missed some very exciting racing on a very smooth racetrack.

Beautiful weather did arrive at the speedway at 1pm Thursday and the racing action was great.

Kelly Shryock picked up his first win of the season and made it the ninth different winner this season for the USMTS. The night started with the Haulmark Trailer Heat Races and Bruce Hanford, Scott Weber, and Kelly Shryock all picked up heat wins.

The Harris Auto Racing B-mains would go to Jason Hughes and Butch Weisser. The stage would be set for the USMTS Midwest Motorsports A-main. Justin Boney the current USMTS point leader would start from the AFCO pole with Matt Taylor to the outside.

Taylor would lead the first two circuits around the speedway before Boney would take the top spot. Shryock who started fourth would catch Boney and these two drivers would race side by side for seven laps, before Shryock would take the lead for good. Six caution flags would bunch the field giving Tommy Myer the chance to advance after starting at the tail after troubles in the heat race. Myer would work his way to a sixth place finish.

Matt Taylor the local Illinois hotshoe would get back by Boney for a second place finish while Boney, Hanford, and Jason Connoyer would take the third thru fifth spots.

Connoyer who won the last USMTS race in Godfrey would also come from a long way back after starting 18th.
